These would be my choices in order of preference
1> Riverside
2> Golden Pai
3> Belle Villa
The Riverside is probably the least natural looking but the river...great! If your first visit I would go for the Riverside as in my opinion the best organised place and great views, though if you want a more natural setting thwe Golden Pai or Belle Villa are ok.
Go to www.chiang-mai-hotels.itgo.com and follow thru to Mae Hong Son
The secret of ant-malaria is doing your best not to get bitten, not easy, but anti-repelents do work for most people.

Yes, this is a malarial-risk area, like Siem Reap is.
Only you and your doctor can decide whether a repellant is enough protection for you. People have different risk factors. Have you talked with your doctor about malarone, the newest anti-malarial? It has the lowest side-effect profile, and many people who cannot take other anti-malarials can take this one.

Hi Jodo
We visited MHS in July 03 for 5 days and stayed at Fern Resort-run by locals-divine little bungalows with air cond and fabulous local handicrafts-super Thai food-lovely staff all for around USD40 per night. It was a highlight of our month long trip to Thailand & Vietnam. We hired a car from Chiang Mai and drove-next time we will fly in as roads are pretty bad & not maintained i.e parts of road caved in and lots of buses travelling too fast for my liking!
We did take Bushmans repellant and it worked- I am allergic to anti-malarial so we just covered up and used the spray all over us. It is a place not to be missed for its people and the lovely rainforest areas and walks. The resort is truly a special place & resort dogs are guides!!November and Feb are best times to go staff told us. Good luck

As Lyndie says the Fern Resort is also an option, I did not list as I have not stayed there but it seem to get good reports and that is emphasied by Lyndie. Agree flights are best, takes about 30 minutes. Great people in MHS!

I guess we're off to buy industrial strength deet. Siem Reap and MHS have the same malaria risk, I gather. (not sure which of the two destinations we'll go with....probably want the one with the least risk of malaria.) Thanks, everyone. We're not leaving until latter part of November, so I may be asking more questions...

jodo, SInce you are going with the repellant options, here's the data on repellants. Deet in a 25-35% concentraion is most effective. Don't opt for the 100% deet products - they won't protect you any better and they are more likely to cause skin irritation. You must coat all of your exposed skin with repellant. The idea of using a high-deet product and dotting it on your skin doesn't work.
You can also buy a pythethrin-based spray to spray your clothes. It helps keep mosquitps from biting through your clothing. It lasts for about 2 weeks with one appplication , even through laundering.
Mosquitos that spread malaria bite from dusk to dawn. Mosquitos that spread dengue bite duing the day time. For malarial-prevention, be especially wary eating outside in the evening.
