Luggage Losses in BKK

Four of us arrived at the new airport Friday night. Only one of us got our luggage. When I started talking to my friends here, it turns out many of them have had the same problem. And the local papers have been running stories about the problem. Three days seems to be about average for delivery. I got mine in 24 hours, but I flew Business Class.

It seems that in the rush to open on time, the baggage system was not yet ready.

I recommend some fresh clothes in your carry-on if you are flying here. Just in case.

The computerized luggage system is not working and instead around 1,000 soldiers are doing it manually! They say that it should be fix sometime around the new year. Brad, be on your way out of Thailand! Make sure you've put a few address tag on all of your luggage and perhaps buy some extra loss luggage insurance.

Oh dear! This is not good. We will be arriving in BKK on 11/30 and will only be staying for 3 days. If our luggage gets lost and it takes on average 3 days to deliver, we will be on to our NEXT destination by then!

Sorry to hear that, Brad. We're flying out on Friday for Bangkok. We're flying Business Class, so I hope our luggage arrives with us...

The husband of a friend of mine arrived into the new airport on the opening day and said that loss and very delayed luggage was a problem. It's not a good sotuation if one is landing in BAngkok and staying for a short period of time and then flying on to someplace else. I've had this situation quite a bit in Europe...luggage not arriving and then I have to fly on to another country. Happy Travels!

Guenami,

did the luggage evenutally catch up with you in Europe or did it only catch up with you when you got home (or worse yet - did it get lost forever)...???? just curious...our next destination after BKK would be LP for 5 days ..

Well, Haliburton...many times in Paris I've had to take the situation into my own hands. I was there only overnight as I was on to a friend's wedding in Denmark. The luggage was lost from L.A. to Paris and I was told not to worry as it would be delivered to my hotel the next day. Well, anyone to believe that line could be sold real estate on quick sand! I've been to Paris many times and knew I would have to take my lost luggage situation into my own hands.

So, I checked out of the hotel very early the next morning and went to the airport and walked into the baggage claim area...this was years ago before all of the strict regulations...well there was all of this unattended luggage just sitting everywhere and there I spotted mine. So I walked over and picked it up, went over to tell someone that I had found it...they could have cared less...asked for no ID or anything...went on with their chichatting so I walked out with my luggage. I could have been going out the door with anyone's luggage. I then jumped on a bus and went to my flight to Copenhagen which was in an entirely different part of the airport. All of the wedding clothes were in that suitcase! I was in the wedding.
If it had been permanently lost, or if I hadn't taken things into my own hands, then I would have gone to the wedding in casual clothes.

Also, a couple of years ago, on my L.A.-N.Y-Milan-Ghana flight, the luggage was lost when I got to Milan. I thought I was to fly on to Ghana that same day, but later found out that the ticket...issued on Delta/Alitalia...was useless since no flight to Ghana even existed that day....another story...so stranded. So, I ended up with plenty of time to raise total ---- at the airport to both find my luggage and to get them to put me up in a hotel until the next day when I raised more than ---- to get on a flight to Ghana....but via Amsterdam! So, once again I had to take matters into my own hands....And on the way home the luggage was lost for THREE weeks on Delta between Atlanta and L.A. It had gotten fine from Ghana-Milan where it was all done by hand since the machines were down and it made it from Milan to Atlanta where I picked it up and walked through immigration and rechecked it and then it didn't show up until for three weeks. I ended up with enough frequent flyer miles for a free trip to Europe after raising ---- on that situation.
I honestly could right a book on loss luggage, but so far none of it has ended up in the warehouse in Alabama where they sell all the loss luggage and items.

Three friends came with me to Paris, a couple of years ago, and all of their luggage was lost. It was a 6-day vacation...got there a day late due to fog...and then when arrived their luggage was all missing. They only had the clothes on their backs. I always take everything I need in a 19-inch suitcase in case the main suitcase gets lost. On that trip my luggage arrived though. Anyhow, the vacation was down to 5 days since the one-day late arrival and their luggage didn't come until three days into the trip. So, they had the SAME clothes on all of those days! The same clothes they were wearing when they had left home. And I end with just a few of my loss-luggage stories out of my anthology. Happy Travels!

Thanks for these posts. I'm glad to be forewarned, we leave for Asia in 6 weeks. I have had similar experience of going two days without fresh clothes in France twice, Copenhagen, Lima, etc. etc. Even when I am on a connecting flight with luggage checked to final destination (as was the case this summer from Paris to Arusha), I found my luggage going round and round the baggage loup at CDG. So its always good to check for your luggage at intermediate stops and to look off to the side of the luggage turnstyle, in case luggage handlers have received it early and set it aside. I will definitely carry one or two changes when I arrive in Bangkok since I fly out to Luang Prabang the next day. I so enjoy reading the posts on this website, thanks all.

Thanks Guenami .... I hope I'll be as lucky with my luggage as Bob was with his but just in case, I'll have to bring a spare change of clothing and pj in a carry-on. But what do with toiletries since you're not allowed to bring decent size liquids on board anymore? I guess just buy them in BKK the night of arrival should our luggage get lost ???...

H33-Don't worry about toiletries. These are readily available in BKK. If there's an irreplaceable cream, lotion or ointment, take a bottle of less than 3 ounces. Your luggage will probably find you before that runs out.
