Luang Prabang to Vientiane

I am travelling to Thailand and Laos in July and am wondering if anyone has any experience with getting from Luang Prabang to Vientiane? I am considering bus, train, boat, etc, but am on a budget and would prefer not to fly unless it is a true nightmare! Any help greatly appreciated!

I returned from this trip in Feb. I flew from Vientiane to Luang Prabang by Lao airline of which there is only 1 flight per day. I talked to a Laotian man who drove between the 2 cities-very hard and long drive. There is no train between the 2, although I am sure there is a bus,but not sure of the schedule.

Could anyone tell me how much an airticket would cost for a return flight from Vientiane to Luang Prabang? What about Bangkok to Vientiane?

Thank you.

Hi Lynn

as far as I know you could also fly direct from Bkk to Luang Prabang with Bangkok Airways. They have also their own homepage where you find all details.
Have a good trip to wonderful Luang Prabang = Bruno

Bangkok Airways (www.bangkokair.com) does indeed fly from BKK to Luang Prabang. They have two flights a day (depending on season), one is non-stop, the other stops at Sukothai. Roundtrip fare is about $275 per person.

I took the local bus from veitiane to LP, and back too Vientiean.. well jeez I suck I just cant remember how much it cost, actually 50,000 kip seems too ring a bell. it'a about a 10 hour journey threw pretty mountains.. well I advice you too go too the bus stop early and sit where you intend too if you come late you'll end up sittin on a plastic stoop which are place up the middle of the bus.. (every square inch of bus is pressed with humanity...

I went during lao new years so all the passengers kept on getting splashed by the locals taking part in the water festival..

may'be try ta combo bus/boat bus/plane

any further questions

sorry for the spelling
