Luang Prabang to Nong Khai

Hello, still working and reworking our SEA trip for next fall.

We have 9 days from leaving Luang Prabang to our meet up with family in Chiang Mai.

We are interested in spending that time in Isan with the possibility of car rental and a stop at Khao Yai National Park. We like to visit cultural sites, scenic areas, parks and small towns.

What is the most efficient way to get from Luang Prabang to Thailand near the area we would like to see? I am thinking flying to Vientiane, bus to Udon Thani for car rental? It doesn't look as if Laos Airlines has that route which seems strange.

Any suggestions for a route that would give us some highlights without rushing too much and still making it to CM by the 10th day? Or does this seem like to little time for Isan?

Thank you!

If you fly back to Bangkok and drive to Khao Yai it will only take you 1.5 - 2.0 hours. If you drive from Udon it will take you 4 hours. Not much cultural sites in Khao Yai and the park is not that large. Some hiking trails and scarce wild animals - hard to spot!

Another thing about car rental in Thailand it's hard to find a company that will rent a car one way. Most expect you return the car to the place you rented it from.

We spent a couple of days in Khao Yai and, whilst it was ok, I really wouldn't make a special effort to get there. Hanuaman summed up its attractions pretty well. You could try going from LP up the Mekong to the Chiang Khong/Huay Xai border crossing and maybe send a couple of days up by the Burmese border before driving to CM. Given reasonable water levels, it is possible by speedboat ( not recommended), luxury boat or just by renting a boat in LP.
