The Aman is just opening, so that may be a soft opening price. If you stay there report back to all of us.

cakegal Jun 19th, 2009 08:01 PM

Yes, The $400 Amantaka rate is through October 31st.

rhkkmk Jun 20th, 2009 04:28 PM

i can't believe the prices are that high....i think we paid $107 for la res....not that long ago either....no hotel i have seen in LP is worth $400

Kathie Jun 20th, 2009 06:25 PM

Bob, the hotel that is $400 is the new Aman. All Amans are at least that much! I don't know where it is located.

We paid in the $100-110 range for La Residence Phou Vao in 2002, back when it was the Pansea Phou Vao. Prices went up dramatically when it (and all the Panseas) were acquired by the Orient-Express Hotel group. I think you went to Laos a few years after we did, which would mean that it still may have been 5 years ago. How time flies when you're having fun!

And last summer, just to provide a little more historical data, we stayed at La Res Phou Vao for six nights (starting 30 July 2008)in a "deluxe mountain view room," (the highest caliber room) that we figured to have been Kathie's room in 2002 for a base price of $254 net, plus an additional $60 per night for an extra bed for our teen-aged son.

That $314 for three people included breakfast and all taxes and service so cakegal's cheapest price of $340 (above) suggests that rates at La Residence have risen handsomely in exactly one year. Economic downturn be damned, I suppose.

rhkkmk Jun 20th, 2009 07:29 PM

kathie she said $340 above which might as well be $400... our laos trip was in 2005...

and $400 is cheap for aman's too... why even the ROS is now charging $500 for a single room

you might want to look at Thong Bay Resort in LP. I stayed there and it was about $3 tuktuk ride to town. It was a chalet on a hill slope overlooking a river. We paid only $30 a night.

But I see you are going for the exclusive resorts there so good luck! I miss LP.

Thanks for another data point, MaryA.

Sigh, the Orient Express Hotels seem to be able to charge what they want. But it's still worth calling them to see if you can strike a bargain. If you call the Orient Express number in the US, you'll talk with someone in Charleston at their Charleston Place hotel (lovely spot). I had a nice conversation with a man there two years ago when we were planning for a Burma trip that didn't happen and was able to negotiate some on price.

Thank you all so much for your input! We ultimately decided to book the 3 Nagas - we liked the location and it seemed to be just a tad nicer than Le Maison. We'll definitely be checking out L'Elephant for dinner while we are there!

I see you booked 3 Nagas. It is nicer than La Maison and looks quite atmospheric from the outside (we did not visit the rooms). La Maison felt a bit too funky to me. We also liked the Lao food at 3 Nagas and ate there 2x during our 5 day visit. However, having recently stayed at Amantaka and given that it's your honeymoon you may want to strongly consider staying there if you can afford it (They are having a deal right now). The location is perfect (in town) and it was really great to have the pool (we were also upgraded to a pool suite that had a private pool - great for romantic evening dips:). It was quite hot and humid in June when we were there. Though with only 2 nights you may not have time to use the pool during the day(you will want to explore LP!). The Aman has free bikes that are so great to have to get around. We had a lot of fun zipping into town and exploring the surrounding areas. Amantaka made out trip very special and LP is an unforgettable experience. Have a fabulous honeymoon!

Have a nice stay at 3 Nagas, I know you're gonna love LP cause of the natural charm. I am actually planning another trip to LP, dont know when but I should try for Dec or Jan again. Got to love the cold weather there.

We stayed at the 3 Nagas twice a couple of years ago. The first room we got was in the annexe and was ok but we moved to the main building after our return from a side trip which was much nicer - if possible I would opt for a room in teh main building We managed to get the 3 Nagas suite which was very nice and had a balcony overlooking the main street which was great for watch the monks on the way to the morning alms giving. The 3 nagas restarant is also pretty good 9especially the tasting menu.
