Looking for budget accomodation for family in Tokyo
Due to some change of plans, we have some free time and have decided to viist Japan. Have alrady booked the tickets.
We are looking for some decent place that we can stay in Tokyo. Family consist of 2 adults n 2 kids aged 12 & 13yrs. We will be there from 30 Nov for about a week. Currently thinking of either Uneo or Shinjuku areas. Any advice? |

We stayed at the Andon Ryokan - http://www.andon.co.jp/ . Definitely the smallest room we stayed in on our travels and no ensuite facilities, but a really great place to stay. The place is run by a group of young Japanese who are very friendly and extremely helpful. The (English) breakfasts are excellent, and, although we have to share bathrooms, there is a fantastic Jacuzzi on the top floor which we used every day. The walls are thin and you can hear every sound, but at night everyone adheres to the requests for quiet and its really peaceful. Also a great location for the subway to get around the city and there are a number of good local restaurants in close proximity.

You will need to advise what your nightly budget is as everyone has a different meaning of "budget" accommodation.

The Andon sounds great. The Asakusa area is great. Very traditional style neighborhood but still close to subway and access to airport train. Nearby is a great family attraction Edo Museum, history of Tokyo but with beautiful displays and very good English signage, a highlight of our two weeks in Japan. (In Asakusa we stayed at Shigetsu Ryokan, which does have a suite in which a family could stay, Japanese style on futon mats on floor, but it is more like 32000 yen per night, so about twice as much as two rooms at Andon at 8000 yen.) Even if you aren't used to sharing bathrooms, I think that Andon with separate mens and womens bathrooms on each floor might actually be more convenient than a family of four trying to share one tiny ensuite bathroom among 4!

I recently stayed in the "b" Roppongi. Very reasonable rates, and fun neighborhood with a subway station about 100 yards away. There are other "b"s in Tokyo as well.
