Looking for a bath and Natto in Tokyo

We have a very long layover in Tokyo on a Sunday in May. We are hoping to spend our time in a public bath; either an old style neighborhoodbath house or even something along the lines of SpaWorld in Osaka.

One member of our gang is also hoping to have natto for breakfast. Any Ideas?

kuranosuke Mar 28th, 2008 12:02 PM

ahhhhh, natto. the breakfast of champions. might that be mari-chan?

i think the la-fi-do, or so-la-fi-do restaurant, whatever that restaurant in narita is called, might have natto. i know that the sushi bar, by ua gate 33 has natto. btw, its an excellent sushi bar. with all that time that you have, you can go into narita town, and go to the supermarket and buy natto sushi, or go to any sushi bar for natto and other delicious sushi.

can't help with the furo. :-)

Every town in Japan has a public bath including Tokyo. The most convenient way to ask is "ichiban chikai no ofuroya-wa, doko desuka?" (where is the nearest public bath here?) -- at the airport it might be a sauna or spa.

Hi Ksan! Actually it is Melissa that wants the natto. Gate 33 though will do if we can't find one near a bath!

thanks bill. We just have such limited time that we will need to know where we are going and head directly there from the airport.

What we really want is to go to SpaWorld in Osaka again. Unfortunately, we couldn't connect thru Osaka this year.

What about that place in Odaiba, Odeo Onsen Monogatari?

"The Oedo Onsen Monogatari is a hot spring park which opened in 2003. It reproduces the atmosphere of the Edo Period which occurred during 1603 and 1896 with faithfully reproduced buildings and shops. There are many types of baths which are fed by actual hot spring water which is produced nearly 1400 meters underground. Visitors wear the traditional Japanese yukata which are cotton kimonos; there are 18 different patterns to choose."

> "ichiban chikai NO ofuroya-wa, doko desuka?"

"NO" is not needed and actually makes it sound very gaijin Japanese. Otherwise a perfect Japanese sentence. Bravo!

You can say "Sento" instead of O-furo-ya too.

Lucy, can I be the fly on the wall for this trip? I know you guys are going to have a BLAST! Can't wait to hear about it....or will it be what happens in SE Asia stays in SE Asia? You should task Mels with taking notes and doing the tr, lol. Mari can supervise ;)

Aloha!

lcuy Mar 28th, 2008 09:49 PM

Why....you think I don't do my trip reports fast enough??You think 3 days out of seven isn't enough?

OK, I admit it. I am not good on the follow up, so I will try and get Mels to do it. If she will do the main TR, Mari and I can each do our take on the same events!

lcuy Mar 28th, 2008 10:08 PM

And thanks for the links... they all look pretty interesting. I really think Mr. Lcuy and I need to head back to Japan in the fall....

Why would someone want to eat natto?

bmttokyo Mar 29th, 2008 02:08 AM

As the Japanese say for most anything they eat .........

IT"S GOOD FOR YOU !!!

emd Mar 29th, 2008 03:15 AM

lcuy, I'm not sure what Spa World is like, but we sure did have fun at the onsen theme place in Hakone. They had a dead sea bath (where you float and can't keep your body submerged), coffee bath, sake bath, flower scented bath, one w/a waterfall to sit under, etc. Very cool afternoon.

kuranosuke Mar 29th, 2008 11:41 AM

those pakes' eat anything. lol.

emd, how long will the cbs last in dc?

emd Mar 29th, 2008 12:21 PM

As long as there is no heavy rain or wind, should last a week to 9 days before they really start to come down.

kappa Mar 29th, 2008 12:35 PM

The Japanese often say, cherry blossoms are noble because they don't last long, yes, about a week. Not like my orchids that have been in flower since almost 3 months now.

kappa Mar 29th, 2008 12:39 PM

Ooops, I thought this was Aloha's Sakura Forecast thread.

kappa Mar 29th, 2008 12:41 PM

By the way my favorite is natto gohan (rice) that I eat with kimuchi.

MelissaHI Mar 29th, 2008 08:53 PM

Now now.....natto is an acquired taste, like poi. And supposedly, the natto in Japan is a thousand times better than the stuff we get in the store here! So I'd like to test that.

HT, K'suke: You guys never had the Natto-chos at Gyotaku???

How long is a public bath, anyway?
