Look what's coming to Delhi!!!

Great idea! It'll be ready in time for all you folks planning trips for end of this year.

vp_singh Jul 14th, 2010 11:32 PM

Very exciting indeed!

Jaya Jul 15th, 2010 01:23 PM

That will be a great help and alternative for people who would otherwise need to hire a car and driver.

Craig Jul 15th, 2010 01:43 PM

The ability to eliminate car, driver and/or guide in Delhi will be a big plus for those that want to travel on their own.

thursdaysd Jul 15th, 2010 02:19 PM

Not sure how I feel about this. I used rickshaws to get around, and I would have missed discovering that when I said Raj Ghat to a driver it was apparently incomprehensible, even though when he said it it sounded exactly the same to me.

On the other hand, on a long trip, the less haggling over price I have to do, the happier I am. I suspect the local drivers may not be too happy about the competition.

dogster Jul 16th, 2010 01:17 AM

Within two days everyone will have found a way to reduce hapless tourists to gibbering wreckage at every hop on and hop off. Whole tribes of beggars will migrate to each stop, knowing that the wallets congregate at a certain place at a certain time. Pooh will be thrown on shoes. This I know.

thursdaysd Jul 16th, 2010 05:31 AM

That is an excellent point dogster..... Guess I'll continue my practice of avoiding these things.

Nutella Jul 16th, 2010 03:52 PM

LOL I thought from the title of this thread that you were referring to Air Force One. Just learned that it's arriving in Delhi the same day as I. And while I'm all for international diplomacy and all that good stuff, please don't mess up my trip Mr. President! They wouldn't close down the Taj Mahal so the first family can have a private visit... would they? How did Princess Di get that photo with no one in the background???

dogster Jul 16th, 2010 05:10 PM

Lordy Nutelly, that's lousy timing. Try and get in AHEAD of the Prez. Seriously. India under security lockdown can be like nothing you've ever imagined. They get VERY serious. And yes, they'll close down the whole of Agra and beat you to a pulp if you complain.

CaliNurse Jul 17th, 2010 12:42 AM

Darn Dogster--you had to dash my hopes. Yes, I figured the hop on /off bus would have an Indian accent to it, but hadnt figured out what it would be. How right you are!!!

Nutellea, yes, the Taj Mahal was shut down for Di's visit. The guide we had was there at the time and said shopkeepers on the little road leading to the Taj were rather irritated!

When does BO arrive? i do hope he stays at ITC Maurya--a fantastic place. He's joked that he hopes a dish at the restaurant there will be named the Obama Platter , as there is already a Chelsea (Clinton) Platter.

Nutella Jul 17th, 2010 12:59 PM

Early November. Maybe I'll get lucky and it won't affect me, thinking positive.

Re the hop on/off bus - I can see how that would be a magnet for shoe pooers. Not for me. My own hop on/off is the Delhi Metro. I've already got a list of what sights/markets are at each stop. Just need to add the exit names and compass directions once exiting the Metro stops and I'll be all set!

dreamcatcher_sk Jul 19th, 2010 10:28 PM

Still think that having a car to your self is a much better way to get around in cities especially like Delhi & Mumbai ! Otherwise it can be quite a struggle with the public transport .. Also agree that Obama's visit will be the toast of the town in November .. He should stay at ITC Maurya.. & given his enthusiasm about Bukhara already ,don't think he'll miss this fantastic restaurant.. !

Nutella--would you be willing to share here, your shopping list with nearby metro stops?
What a great idea!!

Nutella Jul 20th, 2010 03:09 PM

Cali, wish I could take credit for the list but I found it on another website. I'm guessing it's not appropriate to post a link to another travel forum here... but it was posted about four weeks ago in the Delhi forum of site that rhymes with Mindia Ike :)

CaliNurse Jul 21st, 2010 01:04 AM

Nutella, I LOVE Indiamike. There is a phenomenal amount of info, from and for travelers from all walks of life, all interests, all budgets. Fortunately, it lacks the irritating one-upmanship of some other travel forums.
OF course you can post a link to the thread here. Others on Fodors have mentioned the site without being censored or censured. So, pretty please, can you post it..or at least give ahint as to the date of the last post on the thread , so i can search by date?
BTW, i looked for a thread about shopping near metros in IM's Delhi forum. I didnt find that, but found loads of other info.

a-HA!! Perseverence paid off. Is this it??

520 Jul 21st, 2010 04:51 AM

Way kool!! Thanks for perseverance, Cali. I tried to find the thread briefly last night, but was unsuccessful and it was too tired to keep at it.

Have read about many of them already, but having them all together is soo helpful!

Nutella Jul 21st, 2010 03:59 PM

LOL sorry to make you go through all that Cali, but glad you found the thread! Next time, now that I know I'm not breaking any laws, I promise to post the link!

Nutella Oct 28th, 2010 02:52 PM

Well it looks like I can forget about Humayun's Tomb, and I'm sure there will be plenty of closed streets and added security in Delhi, but the good news is that Mr and Mrs O won't be visiting the Taj Mahal after all! Woo Hoo!!!

dgunbug Oct 28th, 2010 03:16 PM

Nutella - Please be sure to provide a trip report upon your return. I am most interested to hear how the metro worked out for you. It seems to me that given the heavy traffic, more travelers would avail themselves of the metro, especially if it lets you out close to stops. When do you leave for India and how long will you be there?
