look for resort suggestions for Phuket and/or Ko Samui areas
 

We have two families with kids ages 10-16 going to Thailand this Spring Break and are in search of some beach resort recommendations in the general Phuket and/or Ko Samui areas. We might spend some time in both areas. Our kids are sporty and adventurous.

We don't want: too commercial, too massive, too crowded OR too remote.

We do want: beautiful, access to activities for our teens, unique, character and charm.

We are looking for the quintessential beach resort that provides a beautiful Thai beach experience with R&R but with easy access to some culture and sporty activities to keep our teens busy and happy.

I always advise that people choose one beach area. Two means you waste time (and money) moving from one to the other. Exactly when is your trip? The two areas have different weather patterns, so you may want to make your decision based on which place is likely to have better weather. Do you plan to make any other stops in Thailand (Bangkok, for instance?)

Hi Kathie, we have 2 weeks total and want to do a couple of days in Bangkok and a few days up both (Chiang Mai, though someone told me it will be smoky there in March?). I initially thought get to a beach right away to decompress for a few days after travel, then do the adventurous part of the trip, and then end with a week at the beach somewhere. This might be too much moving around though for only 2 weeks??

Yes, I do think that is too much moving around for only 2 weeks. I wouldn't go to the north Thailand in March - the crop burning will make it very smoky.

Either side of Thailand works at that time of the year in terms of weather. For dramatic scenery, I'd choose the greater Phuket area over Koh Samui. The Krabi area might suit you with its dramatic limestone karsts. Also, consider booking John Grey Sea Canoes as part of your adventure. Other nearby areas to consider are Koh Lak and Khoa Lanta. Take a look at one of the major hotel booking sites like booking.com or Agoda.com and se which properties appeal to you.

Bangkok has much to offer in terms of learning about Thai culture. You can visit many remarkable Buddhist temples, eat wonderful Thai food and shop to your heart's content. I recommend staying along the river which gives you easy access to the public water taxis. In Bangkok you might enjoy the Anantara Riverside.
