logistics from Tokyo to Kyoto and back

We live in Taipei and plan to meet a friend from NY in Tokyo this October. The real purpose of the trip is Kyoto, so we'll take the bullet train.

To return to Tokyo via bullet train, how does one then get from the train to Narita? Her tickets are already booked, so she cannot fly into Osaka.

I'm puzzled and would be glad of any information. Thanks.

You'd take the shinkansen (bullet train) into Tokyo station, then the Narita Express to Narita airport. You can also catch the Narita Express at Shinagawa station.

So, from the time you're on the bullet train to the time you arrive back in Narita, that would be about how many hours? I'm assuming that must be steady bus service from the station to the airport.

Look at the airport access information of this site. Should answer most of your questions

It would take about 4 hours from Kyoto to Tokyo/Shinagawa to Narita Airport. Add an hour for missing the connection to the airport train. Add an hour in Kyoto for the trip, just because. Add three hours - the amount of time before your flight that you want to be at the airport. That's 9 hours. In other words, what I would do is take the train the night before the return flight and stay overnight at an airport hotel.

Although transportation in Japan is possibly the most dependable in the world I too, would always be in the city that I fly home from at least one day prior.
