Layover in Tokyo/Narita

A group of four of us have an overnight layover at narita on the way back from Brisbane to the UK.
We're flying with JAL so I gather our "free hotel" is Nikko Narita.
We land at 16.45 and depart 12.00 the next day. We quite fancy popping into Tokyo for the evening. There seems to be several options to get there (train/bus) but how do we get back to our hotel after dinner 23.00???
Any suggestions or do I have to give up on seeing Tokyo and settle for Narita itself?

Also has anyone had a JAL layover? What's the hotel like? You get free breakfast, but not dinner, right??

Cheers,

Mark

thanks but that's where I've got the information I know so far. Does anyone know any more?

You are pushing it to have dinner in Tokyo and get back to Narita hotel afterwards but it's possible. The last train for Narita leaves Keisei Ueno at 2324, arriving Narita City at 0055. By JR it's 2253 from Tokyo, changing at Chiba, arriving Narita City at 0031. No trains go as far as the airport after 2130. You have to catch a taxi from the station to your hotel.

I think we might gamble making that last train!!

There's 4 of you; why don't you try taking a taxi back to the airport and sharing the cost, or go to the ANA Hotel or another such hotel and pick up the limousine bus? You could take the train in and the bus out...the latter takes longer but you can enjoy the night sights.

getting the bus back sounds a great idea, I just can't seem to find any evidence that it actually runs in the evening! Does it? I thought that as the transport to the airport seemd to dry up after abot 19.00 that maybe there are no late flightsout of narita and hence no way of getting back there.

Also I've been told a taxi would cost a fortune £150+.

Thanks for the message though, all info gratefully received.
If anyone can advise on how to get back from Tokyo late and/or where to spend our few hours (&eat) there, please do!!

The specific buses that go from specific hotels to Narita Airport do end early, but the one from T-CAT runs until 10:50pm, and more freuqent. Take the subway or a taxi to the T-CAT and catch that bus to the airport.

Don't rely on limousine buses! While from the airport they leave as late as 2300, from Tokyo the last service is 2050 from TCAT, and from hotels around 1700-1800.
The full timetable for Keisei is on Japanese pages of their website http://www.keisei.co.jp/keisei/tetudou/time.htm
Here are the times of last trains from Keisei-Ueno:
Mon-Fri 2206, 2232, 2252, 2312, 2324.
Sat/Sun/Holiday 2200 (Skyliner), 2211, 2222, 2226, 2251, 2255, 2312.
JR Sobu-kaisoku from Tokyo (in Japanese only):
http://ekikara.jp/jreast/time.cgi?route2722
Mon-Fri 2124, 2137 (change at Sakura), 2200 (limited express Hometown Narita), 2253 (change at Sakura).
Sat/Sun/Holiday 2253, 2337, 0001.
All these trains terminate at Narita (city). Get a cab to your hotel.

Oops.. That's right. I misread. The last bus from T-CAT is 8:50pm (20:50), not 10:50pm.
