Lay over in Narita Japan

Hello everybody. We are traveling from Newark to Vietnam. On our way back from Saigon to Newark we have a lay over of 10 hours at Narita Airport (on November 21). We were thinking about getting out of the airport. We heard that going to Tokyo is too time consuming and that 10 hours will not be enough. Anybody has gone to Narita for a short time. How is the process checking out and in at the airport, assuming we have to go through immigration.
Any ideas about Narita, the town itself? Heard is a cute little town.
Thanks a lot for any help.

the airport offers some excursions, look on their website or go to the info booth in the lobby...
we took train twice into narita town and ate and visited the nice temple on the hill... good excursion..
