LostinChina - I use a waist money belt, with the pouch worn at the back and the contents wrapped in plastic. It can get a bit uncomfortable when it's hot and humid, but when I get back from a long trip I feel undressed without it! Neck pouches are generally too obvious, and could be dangerous if someone grabs for one. I used to buy from ricksteves.com, but their new model is bulkier, so I need to find a new source... Definitely wear a money belt of some kind, the last time I was in China I detected an attempt to steal from my daypack - big surprise, as foreigners used to be very safe there.

Great suggestions. I didn't think of the danger aspect of the ones around the neck. Excellent point! I think I will still carry a backpack, just keep the valuables in the money belt. Thanks!
