Laos Hotel asking for passport number?

I'm making hotel reservations in Laos. One of the hotels has asked for a passport number. I've never been asked this in the past when making hotel reservations. Is this a normal procedure for booking a hotel in Laos?

Thanks.

Never had to provide a passport number in advance of travel to any hotel.

Can you book the same place on Agoda, Booking.com or similar?

We travel a lot in Asia, and it is usual to provide passport details. Nothing uncanny about it.

What is your concern? You will have to show your passport on checkin anyway.

Your passport number will be recorded and turned over to the police when you check into the hotel. They are just asking for this info in advance. It's true that if you book on agoda or booking.com they won't ask at the time of booking, but you'll still have to turn over your passport upon arrival. This is true in most SE Asian countries, but also elsewhere. I remember doing this is Morocco, for instance.

Until you arrive at any hotel [anywhere] your passport or it's number has got stuff all to do with the hotel.

No, it is not normal procedure to be asked for the number in advance but it is normal practice to have a copy of your passport taken on check in. If you are concerned just send them any old number.
