Langham Place vs. Intercontinental Hong Kong

A recent post on here spurred me to thinking about Langham Place Hotel again (after I had ruled it out as a potential base for our upcoming trip.)

For our 3 nights in HK in November, I'm currently holding 2 hotel options: a harbour view room at the Intercontinental and a suite at Langham Place. I realize it probably seems like a no-brainer just based on cost alone, but couple that with the fact that we were able to score a huge deal at Langham that would put the suite (600 sq.ft.) at $280/night all-in. Compare that against the nearly $500/night tag at the Intercontinental and simple, right? Well, I still can't get that 'vision' of the view of the Harbour out my window, which definitely wouldn't happen at Langham.

I understand that staying on the water is considered somewhat essential for a HK first-timer although cost is somewhat of a concern (FYI, I'd pay the higher rate but only if it really makes THAT much of a difference overall.) I've heard lots of negative about Mongkok's location (where Langham Place is) but it seems like it's right on a subway line and fairly easy to naviate the city from. Is it really that bad?

Any thoughts would be of much benefit here.

We have stayed at Langham Mongkok - it was on soft opening so we got a great rate in club (which was lovely). Rooms are nice (not very big though) with all you need. Location very handy for all transport & the hotel attached to shopping mall. We were very happy wiht our stay here, but it was one of many times we have been to Hong Kong. The Intercontinental is right for the Harbour view but if its the Harbour view you want & good rooms too this can be had by staying at Salisbury YMCA (where we have also stayed a number of times) - lots on this forum & tripadvisor http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...Hong_Kong.html
on staying there & should certainly be considered, great location, view & cost!

To me, it makes that much of a difference.

I've probably been to HK 15-20 times, and each time I am dazzled and amazed by the sight of the Harbour from Kowloon. I've stayed many times at the IC, a few times at the Kowloon Shangri-La and the Sheraton, and several times on HK Island at Pacific Place hotels (Conrad & Shang). I love the location of Pacific Place, but the IC is far and away my favorite.

My most recent trip was last month, and I stayed in the Sheraton to save a few bucks and to bulk up on SPG points and stays. I had a Towers (top-floor) harbour-view room. The view was nice, but it was just not nearly as good as the IC -- not even close! Worst of all, my favorite sign -- the mesmerizing Panasonic sign -- was blocked from my view (ironically, by the IC).

how much time would you actually spend in your room?? very little...i would prefer to be out on the harbor in a boat or on the star ferry or to be walking along the harbor walkway...

you might also look at the renaissance hotel--great location...

There is no better view than the IC in Hong Kong period.

If you have to think about it then stay at the Langham but the Langham doesn't hold a candle to the IC, there is no comparison between the two no matter how you try to justify it. It all depends on your budget and what you want and can afford.

I just stayed at the Sheraton last week and our friends stayed at the IC.

I would have definatley stay at the IC if I could have afforded it.

Aloha!

How about the IC for one night to "get it over with", and then the Langham for the other two for the larger room and to get a taste of another area?
