Kyoto -> Tokyo via Mt. Fufi?

We're planning an 8-night trip to Kyoto and Tokyo. We fly into KIX so we will be spending the first part of the trip in Kyoto and then take the train to Tokyo (and flying out of Narita). We plan to do a daytrip from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji but in looking at a map, it appears Fuji is between the 2-cities. Would it be realistic to stop on the way and spend 1-night in the Mt. Fuji area? If so, I would be interested in any hotel or restaurant suggestions for that night.

Yes, it would be realistic to do that. It's a good idea, actually. It's a good break from the big cities of Kyoto and Tokyo.

You just need to take some care in choosing which train to take because not all shinkansen stop at Odawara, which is convenient to Fuji-Hakone Nat. Park.

The quickest way to Odawara is on a Hikari shinkansen, 2 hours 8 min. and no change of train. Departures from Kyoto at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00, 18:00, 20:00.

The next fastest are the Nozomi which go to Shin Yokohama where you would transfer to a shinkansen that backtracks to Odawara. That's 2h 36m.

The slowest trains, Kodama, would take a bit over 3 hours.

You will save money on this itinnerary by NOT getting a JR Pass.

There are several traditional ryokan at the onsen in Hakone Yumoto. Farther in, nearer to Fuji-san are several more ryokan hotels.

We frequently have people asking about good choices for a ryokan in Kyoto. I think that you might get a better value in a ryokan at a place like Hakone. And you would have access to actual onsen waters.

Thank you for a very helpful reply. That sounds like a good plan.
