KYOTO TEMPLES by AREA
 

Hi All:

So going to Kyoto for 11 days to gorge on temples but i am overwhelmed; is there any info/advise on how to "conquer" the temple scene by geographic location. e.g. Temples to see in the north quadrant of the city etc. I want to organize so I don't waste sightseeing time. I LOVE ANCIENT Monuments

A bit out of date but you can double check on the internet the various places it mentions to see if a restaurant, etc is still open

Old Kyoto by Diane Durston was updated in 2013. I have the one from 2005 so can't comment on the newer version.

Eleven days for Kyoto - what a luxury! Enjoy!

I second Mara's recommendation to consult japan-guide.com ! But be forewarned that, from what I could tell, the suggestions there for walking through eastern Kyoto (Higashiyama) took me MUCH longer than that otherwise admirable source suggested. I came to the conclusion that the suggestion for that part of Kyoto was based on WALKING time, without considering the time it would take to actually visit any of the temples or shrines. So I took two days for my exploration of Higashiyama, and I did not try to visit every recommended temple, shrine, or other worthy site along that route -- just those that most called to me.

<i>Japan Solo</i> is another excellent, if out-dated guidebook. Although I'm a solo traveler, I saw no reason why "solo" was in it's title.
