Kyoto Hotels

We're scheduled for 3 nights in Kyoto in July - - anyone stayed at the Miyako Hotel, The Brighton recently? Would appreciate suggestions in the $200 - $250 per night range, in central Kyoto.
Thanks

If you are looking for a centrally-located hotel, the Brighton may not be the best choice -- it's comfortable enough, but outside the center. There are two hotels with the word 'Miyako' in their name -- the Westin Miyako is also well outside the center, but is very comfortable.

Two suggestions: the Kyoto Hotel Okura is extremely well-located for the best shopping streets and access to the extremely interesting neighborhoods near the river. The Okura is also next to a subway stop. It is one of the best hotels in the city, and you should be able to find accommodations in your price range.

Another well-located and very comfortable hotel is the new Hotel Granvia, which is actually located in the same building as the train station. Although this location isn't as nice or interesting as that of the Okura, it is a particularly convenient location for getting around town and for getting to/from the airport.

I stayed at the Westin Miyako three weeks ago. It was a very nice hotel. There were a lot of dining options and activities throghout the hotel. It was not located near much, however, we hired a guide and went all over Kyoto- it was really no problem. Enjoy your trip.

We stayed in Hotel Granvia Kyoto, which is built right on top of Kyoto JR Station:

<http://www.frommers.com/destinations/moreaccom.cfm?h_id=30882>

Rooms are quite nice and new. Super convenient in terms of train travel.
Taxi rides to other locations rae quite acceptable.

I stayed a the 3 sisters ryokan. (it has a link on the japan tourism web site).
We had a traditional room with individual bathroom. It was walking distance from Gyon and the temples. The land lady spoke english and was very helpful.
