Kyoto hotel question

My husband and I have booked the Brighton Hotel for 6 days in March, but I am having second thoughts. Our usual goal is a nice hotel under $200 per night if possible within walking distance of the sights and good restaurants. By "within walking distance" I mean within 20 or 30 minutes or so at a decent pace (we enjoy walking). I know the sights in Kyoto are spread out, but I fear that the Brighton is too far from things, especially good candidate restaurants for dinner after sight seeing all day. Any suggestions?

I think the Brighton is near the Imperial Palace. I took the Palace tour when I was in Kyoto in '06 and I don't think there was too much going on around there. Of course the grounds of the Palace are lovely although March is early for sakura. I just looked at the website and the prices seemed higher than $200. Then again I am a budget traveler. Why don't you keep your reservation for the time being and see if you can get something more centrally located. People here like the Granvia which is at the Kyoto Station and the Okura and also the Hilton, I think. Have your searched for other hotels mentioned here on the forum? I stayed at a business hotel on Kawaramachi Dori. Enjoy Kyoto!

All the hotels you mention seem to be booked or over $200 a night. We were able to get 6 days at the Brighton for about $190 a night, which I see has changed. Has anyone stayed at Hotel Hokke which seems basic, but as near as I can tell, is closer to the middle of things and quite a bit cheaper? Thanks.

Consider the Fujita Hotel -- www.fujita-kyoto.com/e/index.html. It's about a block from the Okura, a very short walk from Ponto-cho and the Teramachi-dori pedestrian area, and just across the river from the Gion area. I stayed there a few years ago and found it to be a very good choice for a well-located, moderately-priced hotel.

I stayed at the Sun Hotel Kyoto now known as the Unizo. The website I found doesn't work but it's listed on the Japan Reservation Center website:

ht-san - arigatou gozaimasu!

I thought I had found the site before but when I tried it today from google I got an error message....maybe it was down for some reason.

Anyway I felt this hotel was very well located and the price was right :)
