In case you are interested, and to correct my comment above, the ancient restaurant near Nanzenji that I was referring to is "Okutan." The manner in which they typically prepare tofu is called "yudofu." I had heretofore been laboring under both a misconception and a mispronunciation.
However, the food there is outstanding!

VeeDub, I think you can do your above sites in two days, as you have them laid out above. I just don not know how to get from Kinkakuji to the bus that goes up the side of the river to Ohara, you need to figure that out. No prob doing Higashiyama and Gion in one day. You'll have time to explore the fabulous temples and cuisine in those areas. And shopping, and good food shopping (get some moshi to bring back- try to get some filled w/sakura jelly if it is available, yum!! and sample all the different kinds you can.)

Thanks, Dave. I made a note of it

Thanks, emd3! Were you referring to “Mochi”? I Googled “Moshi” but did not see anything. Are these confections?

I will be staying near JR Kyoto station. I plan to get to Kyoto early in the morning, drop my stuff off at the hotel, and head right out for sightseeing. Do you recommend seeing Nijo Castle, the Imperial Palace, or Kyoto Tower?

I am planning to take taxis around Kyoto to save time. I could take a taxi to Kinkakuji, and then take a taxi back to Kyoto station where the bus picks up that goes up the side of the river to Ohara. How long does it take to get to Ohara on the bus? How much time do you think I should plan on spending at Kinkakuji, and then at Ohara?

Thanks again for all the help!

I love the strawberry filled mochi but Mrs HT loves the chocolate ones......

Kyoto Tower is not worth the time imho. See transport options for Ohara here:

take the taxi from Kinkakuji back to the Shijo-Kawaramachi bus stop to take the bus to Ohara.....

Aloha!
