I'm curious about the travel advisory. I saw it too, Ken. I checked my itinerary just to make sure something had not been cancelled out from under me. They reference problems at BKK airport. But I sure can't find anything in the Nation or Bangkok Post that would suggest airport/travel problems!! Any idea WHY that travel advisory is on NOW??? (Apr 15-30)
I'm planning on boarding "that big 'ole jet airliner" come Monday.

ken i think you will find the best money clips at lim silver on oriental lane....that's the road that leads to the hotel from new road.....all along new rd there are tons of silver places but more jewelry rather than utility type things....river city might have something too, but lim would be better.....they also have another shop on the soi from oriental lane that leads to tongue thai....

River City is mostly arts and antiques. I'd go to some of the silver shops on the main road between the Oriental and the Sheraton Royal Orchid for a silver money clip.

In BKK now. The thunder this early morning woke me up as well. Raining now, maybe it will cool down some tempers.

Ken, I just saw your reply to this question about the BTS on yahoo chat, so now I know that it's OPEN... yippeeee!

Brad is still at the weekend house in Banbung (sp). He will return sometime Monday. He's not sure where they will stay next. He says that no one is in BKK right now, so he and his two friends, whom I'm sure you will get to meet, if not before (maybe quiz night), for sure at the birthday bash Friday night, anyway, they can pick out just about anywhere and get a discounted room rate! He is thinking about the On 8 Hotel, which is right at the UP escalator on the corner of soi 8 and Suk. He's also thinking of going back to Omni Tower. It's familiar. It's pretty cheap, and apartments are roomy.

Anyway, I'm off to Chicago tomorrow afternoon, laptop in tow, but I won't be on line until the Red Carpet at ORD Monday am.

Ken, I can assure you that your rope antics were the subject of great mirth in Needham last night.

as hanuman reported on his thread, i went to silom to check things out. unfortunately, my ninja outfit did not return in time from the laundry, so i donned my light green izod polo shirt, and went to sala daeng on the bts, hoping to be invisible. it did the job, i travelled freely on silom.

just as i got off the train, i saw a bunch of security forces leaving the area. i did not see as many soldiers there as i saw on tv yesterday. theres still concertina wire along silom, but you can easily avoid them. there was a big pro-government rally just as i arrived, with many supporters(lunch break) cheering and waving the thai flag.

it seemed business as usual. the streets were crowded, street stalls full, and people going about their business. since i was there, i decided to have lunch at zen on convent road. the place was packed with farangs and locals alike.

after lunch i went to see my favorite dvd vendor on silom. he has an excellent collection of old japanese movies on dvd. i even bought a silent s. hayakawa dvd from him a while ago.

i could not find any japanese dvds on suk. in fact, i went to two vendors, asking for japanese dvds, and they pulled out a bag from under the table, and showed me a bag full of porno.

i went to a third vendor, and asked if he had any japanese dvd. he replied" japanese or porno?" wth. i gave up.

it seems my japanese brothers are buying these as refresher training aides as they seek happiness in bangkok. lol.

this past sunday, i went to the pier on the bts. i stopped at siam to change trains, and got a glimpse of the red shirts below as the train went overhead. from what i saw from above, it looked like one big red luau. they seem to be having a good time. very festive, not restive. looked like a bazaar. bizarre.

i'm now in chateau de bangkok. my studio room is about the same size as my bedroom at columns bangkok. no complaits, as i got a very good rate here, but i would not stay here if i had to pay the agoda or hotel rate. not worth it. citadines 11 is a much much better value, and a better location. ruam rudee is one heck of a busy street. the motor bike taxi stand near the polenchit bts is flying a red flag. i saw a taxi today also with the red flag.

like hanuman, and others are saying, stay away from the red shirt areas, and you should be ok.

bigger news here now, is the air travel chaos in europe.

well, my ninja excursion exhausted me, so time for a nap. how bad is that.
