Kuching

We are spending 4 nights in Kuching in early September. We are staying at the Hilton. What are the must do things given we have 4 days
Thanks. Lucy

Bako National Park. Get there by bus and then speedboat. You have to wade ashore. Don't carry food with you as the macaque monkeys will relieve you of it. There are several graded walks you can do. The easiest was challenging enough for us.

Sarawak Cultural Village. Plenty to see and do. Easy to get there by bus.

Plenty on Google about both places.

There is an interesting museum in town which we enjoyed. We also enjoyed the river walk and the small shops there, particularly those carrying tribal crafts. We were able to visit the gardens of the "Borneo Orchid King" which we very much enjoyed. Also, there is a shop along the river walk that sells locally grown and processed pepper. The Sarawak pepper has a unique "winey" flavor.

Do wander the town. It is very walkable and diverse. We did the Sarawak Cultural Village - worth the trip. We also did the Semenggoh Orangutan Sanctuary, which is worthwhile if you do not plan to venture further out. You might consider the newer Pullman if you are not locked into the Hilton.

We had a fabulous guide who took us out of town one day for a village tour, a look at some local markets, etc. It was the best of the 4 days we had in Kuching. We also liked the Orchid park, boat rides on the river, walking around town and browsing in the shops.

Visit Semenggoh Orangutan Center. Much better than Sepilok in Sabah. You are allowed to walk amongst the orangs as they are not behind a fence. The park rangers keep an eye on them. I was within 10 feet of a mother and her son.

There are lots of local travel agencies/tour companies that you can book a day trip with once you get there. The offices are a 10 minute walk from the Hilton. We did 2 trips: one to Bako NP and one to Semengghoh and Long Houses. I enjoyed them both and the prices are reasonable.
