Kowloon rooms too small??

Kowloon rooms too small??
Hi - Hope someone can help, I would be very greatful. I'm visiting Hong Kong for five nights in early January and would like a 4* hotel centrally located that dosnt cost > £100/HKD1400 per night, I know I'm asking a lot
I almost booked the Kowloon but have just found out the rooms are v.v.small. My question is do you think its worth staying there or can you suggest an alternative as I'm struggling to find anything to match my criteria..One last thing do you get to use the facilities at the Peninsula if you stay at the Kowloon as I've seen a post saying you can but the hotel talks about having access to a YMCA swimming pool!!....many many thanks in advance.

About Kowloon Hotel in Hong Kong -- My wife and I found the room to be just too small especially with a few pieces of luggages. I would recommend it if you are by yourself. Each room has a computer with internet access for free. I don't expect the room rate to be more than US$100 in Jan. (low season).

I have stayed at Hyatt Regency in Tsim Sha Tsui for three times. Hyatt Regency is centrally located, less than a minute to MTR. Lots of shopping centers/stores. Hyatt Regency is right behind Peninsula. I am going to Hong Kong in January and will be staying at HR again. I think their price is under HKD$1400. The room is fairly big compare to other Hong Kong Hotels. My sister had stayed at the Kimberly Hotel, which is also in Tsim Sha Tsui, but the room are much smaller. I think their room rate is approx. HKD$800.

I've also stayed at the Hyatt Regency, and their room size was fine. You can get the best price from the Hyatt website, www.hyatt.com (or call their toll-free number) Typically, they will give you a lower rate if you prepay.

we have stayed at the kowloon and the rooms are very small....but you can't beat the location and after all you are never in the room...the computers work sometimes but not always...
the y is great and the rooms quite large and it is just near to the kowloon and has a fabulous location...you can't beat the price ...it is not lux in any way...i compare it to an older holiday inn in the usa...

Many thanks for the advice. There will be two of us staying in the room but as was previously mentioned we wont be in the room that much so the Kowloon is still an option.....
Have just noticed a hotel called Metro Park which looks quite good with good rates but not sure on the location!!!!
Or maybe the Excelsior which has recieved good reviews on this forum..

Excelsior is in the heart of the Causeway Bay shopping/dining district, so the location is excellent. The Excelsior is run by the Mandarin Oriental group, so you know it should be good.
The Metropark is very new, and is very close to the Tin Hau MTR station. However, it's a bit of a walk along the Causeway Road to get to Causeway Bay, and you probably have to get on one or two footbridges on the way. But you can always just hop on to the very inexpensive HK Tramway for a couple of stops to get to Causeway Bay.

rkkwan et all thanks again for the valuable info. I'm spoilt for choice...I've also checked the Sheraton which looks good, the rates are OK and seem to be on a par with the excelsior but cant seem to find many reviews/comments on the Sheraton!
Also noticed a place called Mirimar which is a possibility..Too much choice!
Hope to provide assistance/help on this board upon my return.

By hunting around you can occaisonally get good rates at the Kowloon Shangri La. I paid just over £450 (pounds sterling) for 5 nights in an executive harbour view room with breakfast in May this year. The rooms at the Shangri La are absolutely huge (about 45 sqm)and newly refurbished and remodelled. I booked via a UK tour company - Kuoni. As you have mentioned (£
in your query i'm assuming you may be british and should have no difficulty, therefore, making enquiries with Kuoni if necessary. The rooms at the Park Lane in Causeway Bay are also a nice size.
Looking at the Peninsula web site they tend to play down any links they have with Kowloon hotel now. I think you get cross-signing facilities but I don't think you get to use their pool and spa.

I always stay at the Kimberly & rooms are not as small as some of the newer hotels. I have been upgraded to a suite there too & that might be a nice solution for you - the suites are large, pretty bland looking, but nice and I think not a lot more money.

The Kowloon Shangri La is lovely if you can get it at a good price. I didn't stay there my last trip because of the construction, which made it impossible to walk anywhere from the hotel. They told me that everything "should" be done by August, so I would expect it would be fine there now.

If you want to consider the Causeway Bay area, I like the Rosedale. It is not considered a 4*, but I actually prefer it over some of the higher rated hotels in the area.
It's located approx 5 minutes walk from the MTR and the area is safe and close to shopping, food, etc.
They have decent sized Jr Suites that consist of good size sitting/dining room and adjoining bedroom and bath. There is a small kitchenette in the dining are with mini frig, sink and microwave, as well as flatware.
Suites are 450 sq ft and the only difference between the Jr and Delux Suites (other than price) is that the Jr Suites are on the lower floors and the Delux Suites are on the higher floors.
They also have complimentary high speed access and the breakfast (which adds about $60-100HK) is pretty decent.
The Rosedale is a Best Western property, but not at all like any Best Western in the US. Amenities, furnishings and service are excellent.
I would guess that the room rate for a Suite would fall well within your budget (unless there is a major trade show in town).
I would e-mail the hotel directly (vs booking thru the Best Western website) as you'll do better on the rate that way.
Remember that everything is negotiable and the best approach is to let them know that you have heard "that they are a good and reasonable priced hotel. That your budget is very limited, but because they are well recommended by a frequent guest that you are hoping that you might be able to afford to stay with them, but that your budget is only $800HK (or less, its up to you, but $1400 is too high) per night....."
FYI, I pay $1300HK including breakfast for a Delux Suite during one of the busiest times of year each April when I am in town for a major tradeshow. It's a rate that I've negotiated via e-mail - the standard rate for the same time frame is $2000 - $2400HK.

We stayed at the Eaton Hotel last year and were very pleased with it. It is a little futher up Nathan Rd near yao me tai (sp?) district ,but the bus/subway trasportation were excellent. The room was average size, nice quality and had a fridge. The hotel itself was very nice with a small rooftop pool etc.. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. It was also nice to be slightly out of the main tourist district to get a little more local flavor. Speaking of flavor, there were some restaurants in the temple st market area where you could get great authentic food for next to nothing as long as you are at least a little adventurous. We got a great rate with hotels.com for less than 100US per night in OCT.

We've not stayed at the Kowloon Hotel. Great location though! On our two visits to HK we've stayed at the Regal Kowloon which is an oldie but a goodie, the Kimberley (we did not like it-noise problems form adjoining room) and the Harbour Plaza Hong Kong. The rooms at the Regal Kowloon are medium size-big enough for two beds, our luggage, a desk etc. Check out www.wotif.com for standby rates. We've used them several times and also priceline for the very lovely Harbour Plaza Hong Kong at Hung Hom. You could book one or two nights then move on if you're not happy!

Hi zarang..my friend ( single ) stayed at the Kowloon and said that although it is well positioned it was far too small even for him ! In the same area is the Salisbury which gets good reviews and I can recommend the Mirimar and the Park. Have fun and sorry to confuse you more !
