Kowloon hotel Hong Kong

Please give me your input We have never been to Hong kong and would like a moderately priced hotel. Do you recommend the YWCA??? Any input would be appreciated. Andrea

That would be the Salisbury YMCA. I highly recommend it.
Ask for a top floor room facing the harbor.
They also have a very nice breakfast.

i ahve stayed at both and they are located almost side by side....the rooms at the Y are bigger....the rooms at the kowloon are tiny...i would stay at either another time...in the basement of the kowloon is an excellent dim sum restaurant....
you would be happy with either...kowloon provides free internet terminals in your room---not all work however and it is slow...

The Salisbury Road YMCA (not YW) is a great choice. Info on all the Y?s in Hong Kong,

1. YMCA Salisbury Road
41 Salisbury Road Tsim Sha Tsui
Kowloon

This is a great place, fantastic location, it gets good reviews on this site. It really is a nice 4* hotel disguised as a YMCA. They are very popular and often fully booked, so if you are interested, make a reservation soon (you can always cancel). They have standard rooms from and suites. The standard rooms tend to be small so I would opt for a suite if possible. Website for YMCA hotels in Asia is /www.ymca-hotels.com/

2. YWCA Garden View International House
1 Macdonnell Road
Mid-levels, Hong Kong Island
http://www.ywca.org.hk/hotel/Eng/home2.htm

Well located in midlevels on Hong Kong Island. This is a YWCA hotel. They are located near Bowen Road on Hong Kong Island, an excellent flat pedestrian-only road on Hong Kong good for walking and jogging, with wonderful views. This hotel would be my second choice after the Salisbury Road Y as the Salisbury Road Y has more facilities, however it is still a good choice. They have a rooftop pool which is also a plus.

3. YMCA Harbour View
International House
4 Harbour Road
Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Nice location in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island near some interesting local markets and shopping and not far from central. I have not stayed in the rooms in more than 10 years, and they have substantially redone them, I do recall they were somewhat small.

4. YMCA International House
23 Waterloo Road
Kowloon

There is the third Y in Hong Kong, the which was just rebuilt and I have not been inside since it re-opened. It is in Kowloon , not far from the Kimberly. As it is new, the facilities should be good. Worth a look. As it is the same price as the Salisbury Road Y, I am guessing the facilities are very good and they can charge more even though their location is secondary, IMO. Finally, as you may not be able to tell from rhkkmk?s message, there is a hotel called the Kowloon Hotel, located a block over and behind the YMCA. It is operated by the Peninsula group, who run the much more expensive and luxurious Peninsula Hotel in front of the Kowloon Hotel. Take a look at peninsula.com. The group also runs the Excelsior Hotel in Causeway Bay on Hong Kong Island, which is a very nice 4 star.

Just want to amend some information in Cicerone's post.

There are still other YWCA guest houses around Hong Kong. I'm going to stay at one of them - the Anne Black House in Kowloon this Christmas, which has pretty good rates, but not too convenient for tourists.

And the Excelsior is run by the Mandarin Oriental group, not the Peninsula.

I have already just posted that we recently stayed at the YMCA Salisbury just a couple of weeks ago, but I will mention it again...I would classify it as a 3* for the rooms, but a 4* for the amenties and the view (we had a harbour view room and the view was awesome)..As well the location is great! If I ever go back to HKG, would be my first choice..

I am writing this as I sit in my room at the Salisbury YMCA, looking out to the Harbor. It is not posh on the level of the grand properties that cost at least 4 to 5 times as much, but it is quite comfortable and the location is terific. Rooms are spotless, comfortable and nicely arranged. Service is excellent. Not sure about * rating - in Paris this would be rated at least 3*, probably 4*. Two onsite restaurants offering decent food at prices reasonable for the area, room service also available. Rooms are modern, quiet, offer individually controlled AC, and complimentary coffee/tea making. Beds are very comfortable. Wireless internet connection available for a small fee. Bathrooms not huge but not tiny either, well appointed. All in all, I can see why it is necessary to book in advance.

Not that it is of great consequence, rhkkmk, but I have stayed in 4 star rated properties in Paris that were no better than the Salisbury.
