Koh Lak vs. Krabi

Hey all - trying to make a final decision for our honeymoon in December. Koh Lak or Krabi. Hi

We are looking for a location with the "best of all worlds"... something relaxing, scenic, with biking/hiking options, day trip options, not over-run by tourists (which I recognize is hard in December), but not completely deserted/off the beaten path.

Could someone kindly explain the differences between the two and what you recommend?

Kathie - tried to direct message you about this, but Fodor's doesn't allow that.

Thanks!

The scenery at Krabi is more dramatic. There are day trips to the small islands off shore, as well as to tourist sites in the area (Emerald Pool for example). I'd pick Krabi. As much as I like Khao Lak (the J W Marriott is gorgeous) I think there is maybe more to (easily) do at Krabi.

Carol has given you a nice summary. If you want to be able to do more active things, Krabi is a great choice. Koh Lak is more quiet and relaxing.

Thank you both for being very helpful.

My fiance and I have chosen Khao Lak (Meridien) over Krabi (Sheraton) for our honeymoon (we're spending 5 nights in Khao Lak after visiting other parts of Thailand) based on all of the recommendations and information. From what I've read, it appears that Krabi is only 2.5 hours from Khao Lak.

Is it worthwhile to use one of our five days to do a day trip to the Krabi area if we leave in the morning and return at night? Is there a recommendation for how to do this? For example, could we get dropped off at Railay for a tour? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You are going to a beach for recreation and relaxation. Enjoy Khao Lak and save Krabi for next time.

I have stayed at both places a number of times.... I think you have chosen correctly.

the meridian is a good choice too, although I prefer the Marriott.

I would not plan to visit krabi. I do suggest that you have a rental car for your entire time... I like pure car rentals in Phuket (airport delivery).

there are plenty of things to do in K/L area. the car is the key. meridian is a bit remote as is the Marriott. great restaurants in town-- The Candle is a favorite.
