Ko Samui vs. Hua Hin
 

My fiance and I are looking to go on our honeymoon to Thailand at the end of September. Ko Samui seems to be a nicer place to visit with more to do, but we are worried that it will rain a lot during that time of year. If this is the case, should we go to Hua Hin instead? any thoughts?

For a Honeymoon Samui would be much nicer and lots more to do, Hua Hin unfortuantely has 'zero' entertainment and except for some beer bars (pool tables, fottball on TV etc) there is nothing to do in the evenings except have a meal and some shopping. I think you will find Samui far more romantic!

Thanks James. And will it be raining a lot during that period in Ko Samui as opposed to Hua Hin or is the difference negligible?

Well the rainfall stats for September are:

Phuket: 16.5 ins
Samui: 8.2
Hua Hin: 3.2

So although the rainfall will be lower than Phuket it is still higher than Hua Hin.
I know Hua hin well and we have weekended there 6-7 times a year for years and years, however, we tend now to go mostly to Jomtien beach just past Pattaya because for us there is more to do and the kids get totally 'bored' in Hua hin.

I don't know your age group of how you plan to spend evenings. But I would venture that Hua Hin is simply 'too quiet', much more so than it was a few years ago. On Samui you can stay in a quiet location but if you want a lively evening, some music etc then it is available within an easy distance. Apart from watching the 2 sets of traffic lights change after 9 or 10 pm there is nothing in Hua Hin apart as I said for quite a few 'beer bars' around the Hilton area.

i agree with james...hua hin is way too boring for a young married couple on honeymoon...that is unless you would be content to stay for a few days in one of the upscale hotels and find your entertainment within their confines, which is possible...in which case the hyatt, marriott or sofitel would be my choices...
how about a few says on samui and a few in hua hin....hope you are planning a couple of days in bangkok at the peninsula also??

Another 'option' for that time of year 'could be' to split between say a lively place with nice resort hotel say like the 'Dusit Resort' in North Pattaya ($110-120 for seaview room )plus a week on Koh Chang Island ( down the coast from there ) at some nice place like the Panviman Resort. That way you get decent weather plus have a mix of lively plus tropical Island, the Panviman is about $120 a night.

Those places are like 'opposite' Hua Hin on the other side of the Gulf so you should get fairly decent weather, and it's just a few hours by road from Bangkok, and then a few hours by road and short boat trip onwards to Koh Chang.
That would be a good combination if you are young 20 or 30 somethings who want some lively entertainment, shopping, restaurants but also want some Tropical island beach fun too, just a thought!

Thanks for all the advice. We will certainly consider the options you told us and think of an alternative plan to Hua Hin (as we are in our mid-20s and do want a bit of excitement). And yes, we are definitely going to be at the Peninsula in Bangkok for a few days and the Four Seasons in Chiang Mai another few days. We are so excited!

Mid 20's then simply 'avoid' Hua Hin, Samui much better for you. Some nice bars and the Green Mango is a 'must'...Bacardi Breezers, music, fun! Congratulations and enjoy!
