KL restaurant

We will be in KL for one night in early January coming back from Thailand (we're using ff miles on Malaysian Air). We're staying at the airport hotel but figure we could take the train into the city for brief sightseeing and a nice dinner. What restaurant would you recommend? Would like it to be asian rather than French or Continental. A nice restaurant that doesn't cost a fortune and would be relatively easy to get to. Someplace to end what I hope will be a wonderful 3-weeks!

Thanks

The best restaurant we ate at on our recent trip to KL (see my full report, Kathie goes to KL) was Frangipani, which is fusion. The food was truly exquisite.

No restaurant should cost you a fortune in KL as long as you avoid vintage wines.

For an Asian restaurant I like the Shang Palace in the Shangri La hotel and the Lai Ching Yuen restaurant at the Regent Hotel.

For Indian Food - try The Bombay Palace at 388 Jalan Tun Razak

thanks for your suggestions!

Kathie -- where is frangipani?

Kathie Dec 8th, 2004 03:24 PM

Gloria, I don't think I have the address. We stayed at the Ritz and it was maybe a 10 minute cab ride from there, so it's pretty centrally located. It is located on a short street of restaurants. I will chack at home and see if I have any other info.

Kathie -- I read about it on your report. Was it $150 per person?

Kathie Dec 9th, 2004 08:36 AM

No, it was $150 for two of us, including a very good bottle of French wine.

Have Frangipani got a website ?

Kathie Dec 17th, 2004 06:43 AM

I googled it, and Frangipani does not have its own website.

Gloria, if you want to go to Frangipani, I'd recommend getting reservations.

Hi there, I will be in KL over the weekend and reading Katie's note has affirmed my belief that Frangipani is the place to go. I made a reservation for Saturday and I can't wait to be amazed by the food! Fusion you say eh? Well.. that should be interesting. Has anyone stayed at the WESTIN before? Would like to find out if this hotel is worth all that buzz. Thank you!

I hope you enjoy Frangipani - I thought it was wonderful!

I saw the Westin, didn't see the rooms. It looked fine. I hadn't heard any buzz about it. It didn't look especially buzz-worthy to me.

Here is the address for Frangipani:

25 Changkat Bukit Bintang
50200 Kuala Lumpur

Any cab should be able to take you there.

You can also try Tamarind Hill restaurant for Thai-Vietnamese food, but this place is slightly out of the city centre.

If you want to keep the bill lower, avoid wines. Wines in Malaysia are expensive because of the high duties & taxes imposed on them.
