Looking at 10 days in Khao Lak Thailand, July 2018. Can anyone recommend a resort (we dont need kid friendly) 4-5 star, on the beach. Has anyone been to Beyond Resort or Apsara Resort? Is the beach good for swimming? Thanks

we love the jw Marriott and have been there 5 or 6 times and will be there again this December....fabulous breakfasts too.

I would avoid Khao Lak and the the Andaman coast in July. It is the rainy season and you are unlikely to see much by way of clear blue skies at that time of year. More likely, heavy downpours, high humidity. Seas could be rough too.

In Thailand, the gulf coast (Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Koh Tao) will have better weather, but the beaches and resorts are not as good. There are nice resorts and hotels at all those places but they are all very different. Koh Samui is known for its party crowds, Koh Tao is great fro diving. We returned to Hua Hin in July this year for a few days. The weather was ok but the place was awful, not at all like I remembered. Unless you want to stay in your hotel the entire time, I would avoid. That said, the Centara Grand there, is a fantastic place.

For a beach holiday, I think I would consider Bali.

Thank you for your great advice. We will reconsider. What is the weather like in April? Any better. I have been to Bali lots of times, just looking for a change. I have been to Thailand (Bangkok and Phuket, but in 2000).

You are welcome jayne- April should be better on the Andaman coast. it will be getting hotter and on the cusp of the rainy season ( as far as one can tell these days! ) . We have been diving from Khao Lak in April and it was pretty good.

If you have done Bali, Malaysian Borneo may be worth a look.

July was fine this year...most rain at night but it was a bit humid! April much the same.

Hotels...The Sarojin is probably the best one.

J W Marriott is nice but getting packed with Chinese so not as good as it was.

Avoid Koh Tao...now known as death island.

What was the sea state like Cyansiam? Even when it's calm I didn't find the sea along the beach from Bang La On and Bang Niang particularly inviting. But the sea at Nai Yang close to Phuket Airport was very inviting.

Agree with you about the atmosphere of the some of the hotels being spoiled by large, noisy Chinese and Korean tour groups. Always worth trying to find out whether a hotel caters for them before booking [Trip Advisor reviews]

The sea was inviting last time we were there (Khuk Khak Beach - J W Marriott bit), slightly rough and beach not too busy. Always stay northern end as driving back to Phuket from Ranong.

Not just the tour groups coming now so unfortunately the only way to avoid is to stay at the most expensive hotels you can!

Hmm- Im not very tempted now. I'll have to do some more research perhaps.

Or somewhere inexpensive such as Walkers Inn at the southern end of Bang La On. Stayed there for a week @ 600 baht for a big, clean double ensuite room with balcony. Run by a down-to-earth ex-coalminer from Castleford [UK] and his charming Thai wife and daughter. Great vfm, and a well recommended restaurant too.

Also stayed at Cousins Resort in Bang Niang. Another good vfm place unlikely to attract the noisy crowd.
