Kanchanaburi - Chang Mai By Train?

Still planning........

Is there such a route?

After a few days in BKK thinking of going to Kanchanaburi/River Kwai area and then travel North without going back to BKK.

Thanks - VHS.

Or maybe Kanchanaburi to Mae Hong Son may be a more logical destination?

To get to Chiang Mai in the north you must take the train from Bangkok. From CM to Mae Hong Son you can either fly. take a bus or hire a car/driver. You could also rent a car and drive yourself.

Thailand has only a very small rail network, that is also very antiquated. Also note that there are a lot of problems with wash-outs on the northern line right now. There will be delays and possibly cancellations between now and November.

Excellent plan, and maybe you can do it without going via BKK if you go by bus, but it might be time consuming, and one of those things you do if you have loads of time and like a challenge.

Almost certainly quicker to go back to BKK, but be aware that the train from Kanchanaburi goes into the station on the western side of the Chao Praya River and the train to Chiang Mai goes from the main station Hua Lamphong on the eastern side.

Of course, you might be able to fly.

OK thanks for the feedback.

Thought the train may be an opportunity to see some of the landscape whilst experiencing everyday Thai life/people.

Any idea what the travelling time by train is from BKK to CR? Haven't grasped the distances there yet!

We will be in Thailand for 23 nights in total and whilst conscious about doing too much, want to include as much as is comfortably doable.

Train to CR? There is no train to CR. Chiang Mai is the "end of the line" for the train. Travel time is nominally 12 hours, but 14 is more common.

vhs,

Do go to Kanchanaburi! Do take the train to Chiang Mai. You are right - the trains are a great way to travel. Here's the website so you can check times, prices and options.

http://www.railway.co.th/english/index.asp

Kanchanaburi to BKK is not a big journey - you might consider doing it by bus as far as Nakhon Pathom from where you can get a train to BKK.

The best trains to Chiang Mai are the overnight ones, so just leave Kanchanaburi at lunchtime and you could be in CM the following morning.

It doesn't really matter if you have to go back to BKK - it's annoying but eminently practical.

Cheers.

MichaelBKK - Apologies meant CM not CR.

Chimani - Will definately go to Kanchanaburi - will also look at the bus option and thanks for the link for train info.

Appreciate an ovenight journey is probably best - we did an overnight train journey in India (18 hrs in total) snd whilst the experience was fantastic, this time would like to life by daylight. Not crucial though - will look for most pratical. VHS.
