Kanchanaburi

I'm a history buff and also heard the countryside is interesting around this area. I thought about a long daytrip but feel two or three nights might work out better.

Can you take a bus from the southern/south terminal in BKK? Not on a budget, so would a taxi work? How much would be a fair price?

Thinking of staying at the Felix River Kwai. Any other suggestions?

Things to do and see

River Kwai Bridge
Hellfire Pass
War Museum
Cemetary
Ride on the Death Railway
Erwan Falls
Sai Yok Noi Falls
Tiger Temple

Anybody done any river rafting there?

Recommendations on places to eat and drink are welcome.

Thanks in advance for your help

There is a very moving Temple that was a hospital for the prisoners during the war - pic here

And here's a picture of a great restaurant very near the bridge (might be called Chukradon?)

It appears there is a bus from the Southern Terminal

or you could contact Tong (Bangkok Tour Guide) for a guide/driver. We went with her to the Tiger Temple and Floating Market on the same day.

Dagas, we took the bus from K to BKK's Southern Terminal several years ago. I think the buses run on a regular basis.
Lonely Planet's latest book would have that information.

We had taken a taxi from Hua Hin to K for US$50 and stayed at the Fenix for 3 nights and loved it. The food was some of the best Thai I have ever eaten. We were the only Americans there. The "bridge" is easily accessible by foot but we arranged all of our other sightseeing through the hotel.

Had a great trip. Felix River Kwai was fine if a little dated. Nice pool. Easy to get into town. Hired a driver for 1800 Baht to go to Erwan Falls, Hell's Pass, explore a cave and do some river rafting. Long but very satisfying day.

Degas, are you in BKK now? My family is here for the holidays. If you've looked at my thread, you know that dogster is also in BKK right now. Also mango7. BKK is full of fodorites!

Forgot to mention that I paid 2000 Baht for a private car to drive me from BKK. Same rate going back.

Carol - we must have passed in the night :) I spent one night in BKK and then went to Krabi and Khao Lak.

degas, are you returning to BKK anytime in the next 5-6 days? I'm heading back home on Jan 4. DS (the pool player) is here until about a week later. You two should play a game or two!!

Carol, back in hawaii now. Worst trip ever going back. Got sick as a dog 8 hours prior to departing BKK - throwing up and the runs all at once! Popped a fistful of meds and eventually stopped the misery!

Degas,
Sorry to hear about the illness. Was it the food?

Maybe we'll catch up with you the next time we're in BKK at the same time.
