Hi Bob, I still have to look up your old trip report! It would be hard to cut Mumbai because that's where our ship disembarks : - ) Well, I guess we could leave just when when we arrive, but since we're there, we may as well see some of it. I was thinking 2 nights, given that we'll be off the ship early….but, is 1 night enough? I actually thought I'd mostly do some shopping there. Glad to hear you liked Udaipur since I thought it sounded interesting and perhaps, less chaotic.

Barefoot - thank you for your kind comments on my report. It is so difficult to say what to cut. Udiapur is lovely, but a bit further away. My husband had the most difficulty with his asthma in jodhpur, but I really enjoyed it there. Jaipur is easy to get to from Agra and I strongly suggest stops at the stepping well and monkey temple between those cities. Delhi is worth at least two days but be sure to hire a driver to make it easier to see everything. We regret not getting to Mumbai - is that where the cruise ends? Which ports will you visit on the cruise? IMO it would be a mistake not to visit Varanasi. It is one of the most fascinating places we have ever been to.

Let me know if I can help you further. Aren't you in south Florida like us?

Hi June, Yes, we disembark in Mombai so we'll see it whether we want to or not. We make two cruise stops in India first….Cochin, where we'll tour the back waters of Kerala ( sounds a lot like our mangrove backwaters of Florida!) and also, Mangalore, which I"m not sure what we'll do there yet. I mistakenly let my husband read a travel article detailing all the cremation and death events in Varanasi, and I"m pretty sure I can't get him to agree to go there : - )
I really would like to see Jaisellmer, but I also don't want to do overnight trains or long days driving. My initial opinion is that I'd like to cut Jaipur, but it does seem to be one of the easiest towns to get to and from. Yes, we live on the Gulfcoast during the winter…but now, we're cooling off in Northern Wisconsin.

You really can't see any bodies up close and they are all shrouded in cloth before being burned. Boats are not allowed that close to the cremations and you can avoid seeing the bodies if you do not wish to. Again, Varanasi is fascinating.

Lucky you escaping the heat. It is steamy down here.

I've now been both to the mangroves backwaters of Florida and the backwaters of Kerala...they are NOTHING alike other than being on the water. You will be pleased.

Uhoh - glad to hear that. A southern India trip may be in our cards down the road. The one thing that has held me back was the thought that the terrain would be much like florida's.

"the thought that the terrain would be much like florida's."

No. Just no. And even if the terrain were similar, the culture is anything but.
