Jews in China. Who knew?

This is a great blog from a couple traveling the world. This most recent post was about first Russian and then European Jews immigrating to China as refugees. I found it interesting and thought others might too.

When I visited the synagogue in Szeged in Hungary, I learned about the Jews who escaped to Shanghai during WWII. Very interesting, and although the Japanese herded them into a ghetto, they didn't try to exterminate them.

Yes, I knew of a Jewish artist who escaped to Shanghai. There was a vibrant Jewish community in Shanghai.

American Shanghai resident Tess Johnston still leads tours of Shanghai's Jewish quarter, although I think much of what I saw with her more than a decade ago has been torn down.

There is an interesting book. The Lima Inquisition- The Plight of the Crypto-Jew in Seventeenth Century Peru.A case concerning Rodrigo Vaez Pereira, a Portugese merchant , accused of practising Judaism in secrecy while pretending to be a Christian. Circa 1650.Eventually found guilty and sentenced to death at the Stake.

These Peruvian merchants, who were maritime traders, were not all of Spanish origin but were said to be Portugese decent. These were 'New Christians',converted from either Judaism or Islam and would often practice their previous religious beliefs in secrecy.

Viator doesn't offer any tours on its own, it is just a reseller of tours. So I always encourage people to take a tour with a local agency or group rather than paying Viator.

Tess Johnston has returned to the U.S. after years of being a Shanghai resident. You do not need Viator if you are only visiting the museum, they have English-speaking guides and volunteers.

She was fairly well on in years when I last saw her, so I was surprised to see her website still up, offering tours. I have a number of her books, and wish her well.

But the answer to the original question remains the same. Who knew? Lots of people.
