Hello,
Can anyone tell me whether jellyfish are usually a problem in early February in the waters off of Thailand? I just recently read about some serious jellyfish injuries around Thailand, but no dates were given. Specifically, I am referring to the Phuket and Ao Nang areas. Thanks!

Not so common, but when you travel I'm afraid you have to take the rough with the smooth. Swim in the sea in most places and you have the chance of 'something'. If you are concerned stick to hotel pools. In Phuket be worried about the Jet-Ski's !! Far more dangerous.

There are some nasty jellyfish around Thai waters. Phuket and the Andaman seaside of Thailand doe not have much of a jellyfish problem but the eastern seaside, gulf of Thailand(Hua Hin etc), does have some nasty jellyfish.

On some beach with "murky" waters like Hua Hin many swimmers get stung by jellyfish. My wife was stung or burnt by a fire jellyfish last year but with proper first aide she did not suffer much.

A good way to tell if jellyfish are around is to walk on the beach between high tide and low tide and if you see jellyfish washed up on the beach then becareful.

i was in hua hin last november or december (02) and there were jelly fish on our first day but none on subsequent days...i did not hear of anyone being stung and we went in the water...just stayed away from them...

Hi,

I am now staying in Thailand Hua Hin (march 2004) and a lot of jelly fish are swimming close to the shore. Until now only big white jellyfish were there and i got biten i doesnt look very serious (bad scar only) but today (maybe because of a stormy weather)appeared smaller brown/red jellyfish which are supposingly far more dangerous. Any comments on this, is there a real danger ?? As a kiteboarder i spend a lot of time in the water and am very exposed, thanks for your comments

Those reddish jelly fish are the type that stung my wife a few months ago. A lot of pain, maybe some fever and definitely scarring but unless you have some allergic reaction I don't think it's fatal.

I would keep a good supply of first aid stuff when you're kiteboarding. Have plenty of vinegar and antihistamine and FYI the local hospital in town is very good at first aid for jellyfish stings.

PS. Jellyfish, cooked, make very good snack so you might want to try some in the local restaurant.

I've been to Ao Nang/Railay in Jan. 2002 and Feb. 2003, never had a problem with jellyfish either time.
