Japanese Alps
 

I'm traveling with my family to Japan May 22-June 4 (including kids ages 7 and 9). We all love to hike and are interested in day hiking in the Japanese Alps, perhaps around Takayama. We won't have our cold-weather gear (traveling light), other than jackets/raincoats. Definitely no boots. Are there hikes in the Alps that won't be snow-covered?

We did get a good book on hiking in Japan, which is great, but I can't find the answer to that question.

We will also be hiking around Kyoto. If the Alps are too cold, any other hiking areas to consider between Tokyo and Kyoto?

The valley bottom walks around Kamikochi will be clear of snow. This is more walking than hiking, but is very pleasant. The masses of people that come into Kamikochi do not venture very far so don't let that put you off.

You could then see if the more difficult hikes are viable once you're there.

It's best to get off the bus at Taisho-ike (pond) and start walking from there rather than take it all the way to the bus station (you will need to arrange your return ticket when you pass by there, though).

Yes, I also "hiked" at Kamikochi in mid-November of 2013. Light snow on the ground and about 25 degrees F., so in May-June, I would expect you'd be snow free. Nice 2 hour walk through the mountains.
