Japan travel - train tickets
I will be traveling in late December to Japan and have been told that I should get train tickets in advance as it's really busy. How do I do that? Also, is the Green Car worth the extra cost?
I am traveling between Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and I think Kanazawa or the Izu Peninsula. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |
We were in Japan in November - right at koyo - and we bought our tickets once we got to Japan. The only way I know of to buy in advance would be through a travel agent.
Do be aware that unless you ask, your tickets will be printed in Japanese. Ask for your tickets to be printed in English. Also note that you will need tickets for seats as well as tickets for the train, and they are often printed separately. If you are taking luggage with you on the train, the Green car is well worth it, IMO. Do use the luggage delivery service whenever you can - it is a fabulous service! |
Thanks Kathie. I had heard that Christmas/New Year's is a busy travel time for tourists and locals alike and that it might be hard to get train tickets but can't find where to buy them ahead of time. Guess I'll have to wait. Thanks again.

The green car is totally worth it the extra cost! I traveled in the green car during a busy travel time in Japan and it was uncrowned and very comfortable.

Thanks hnl. Will probably do this as well.

Look into a JR rail pass. It will save you a considerable amount of money if you take several trips.

Thank mrwunrfl for the link. Unfortunately I will be traveling during the not recommended peak time and I am a control freak when it comes to travel. But, I guess I'll just have to get used to it. Thanks again.
