Bonjour Linda,

Compared to Kyoto and Ise, there is pretty little to recommend about Nagoya, especially if you only have 8 nights in Japan.

Kyoto has tons of places of interest, is a great base for daytrips, with the added advantage of a wonderful tourist office (Welcome reservation center - 9th floor of Isetan dept store inside the station) that will handle last minute hotels reservations and help you plan things should you change your mind once there.

My advice then is to start with 3-4 days in Kyoto, then maybe 1 night Mt Koya and 2 Ise, then straight to Nagoya on your departing day, but be ready to change your plans should you find something to do elsewhere, knowing the tourist office can help you arrange everything.

Have a great trip.

Do you nned get reserved seats for the 8:21 Shinkansrn Hikari- Kyoto to Himeji on a Wednesday morning (4/20)? What about a return on the 1:03 Shinkansen Hikari or 1:58 Shinkansen Nozomi, the same day? I wouldn't want to have to stand the whole way. Also can we buy these tickets ahead of time at KIX or the Kyoto train station?

Always best to reserve seats, as the non-reserved seats fill up quickly. You can do this at the same time you buy your tickete, which you can buy in advance at any station or most travel agents. It's probably easiest and quickest to buy all of your tickets at KIX at the TIS shop just next to the JR ticket office (line may be long at JR and TIS will have chairs for you to sit in while they search schedules for you and issue the tickets.
