Japan Rail pass needed?
Hi guys!
Is it worth it for me to get the 7 day Japan rail pass (shinkansen) for the following transfers?
|
Nevermind! I found the calculator to use!!
Not sure how to delete thread |
The JR ferry is covered as well.

What calculator?
The answer is yes, if you were planning to jam that (insane) amount of travel over a period of 7 days (6 nights). The shinkansen doesn't run between Kanazawa and Kyoto. I suggest going to Kanazawa from Tokyo and then to Kyoto to avoid the backtrack. |
There are online calculators that approximate if a rail pass will pay off or not, such as this one. The most accurate way is to just add the fares together, such as from Hypedia.

What mrwunrfl said. Is Kanazawa a day trip? Because that is not nearly enough time. Perhaps you could post your whole itinerary.
I always price individual tickets on Hyperdia and then compare to the price for the pass. I have never found a full JR Pass cost effective, but I travel slowly. |
Adastra2200, thanks for the link to the calculator. I like how it showed that a 7-day pass "pays off" and when I added another train it showed that the 14-day pass also pays off.

You're welcome. It doesn't include everywhere of course, just the most mainstream destinations. Sometimes, you still have to add up each leg such as calculated on Hyperdia.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist. I found working with Hyperdia awesomely easy.) |
Do realize that with the rail pass you can't use the Nozomi or the Mizuho Shinkansen trains. But on Hyperdia you can uncheck the box on their search filter to omit these trains.
