Japan Rail 7 day Pass-is it worth it for 2 rides?

If I'm only using the trains twice from Tokyo to Kyoto and then from Kyoto to Osaka is the 7 day Japan Rail Pass worth it?

I read somewhere that the trip from Tokyo to Kyoto alone is worth the price, but I wanted to get your advice.

I know you must buy it in advance outside of Japan so I wanted to get feedback before buying it. Also do most people just buy it at a travel agency or somewhere online?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Generally if you are only taking a few train rides a pass is more expensive than purchasing the individual tickets. Bur take a look at www.hyperdia.com and price out your tickets. For individual tickets, you can easily buy them at a train station in Japan. I printed out what tickets I wanted from the hypermedia website and took the print out with me to the train station to buy my tickets.

no the pass is not worth your itinerary. Buy tickets as Kathie suggests.

Not true. The regular fare Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo is less than the 7-day pass. Buying tix for Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka would be about half the cost of a JR Pass.
