Japan- Kyoto to Beppu
Could someone assist me with how to get from Kyoto to Beppu? We're planning a stop in Beppu before moving on to Fukuoka to catch a ferry to Busan. There must be a transfer point that I am not finding when trying to figure this out on my own.
Our main reason for wanting to stop in Beppu is to try out getting buried in hot sand. We're budget travelers so we are fine taking buses. Thanks for your help. |
If you want to go by train, enter Kyoto and Beppu in hyperdia.com and you will see the different possibilities.
You can also fly from Osaka to Oita which is close to Beppu. If you arrive in Japan on an international flight, you might find a flight that is less expensive than the train: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2364.html |
You do have the option of taking a ferry
https://www.ferry-sunflower.co.jp/language/english/ If by rail you would connect in Kokura, Kyushu, check Hyperdia. I thought the sand burial was a part of the Ibusuki experience which is closer to Kagoshima. Still reachable by rail or ferry. http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/location/r...a/ibusuki.html Personally the Ibusuki area seems to be more attractive than the Beppu area which is a little more built up and urbanized. Mara's plane option would still work for Kagoshima. Kyushu Rail does have a rail pass option that makes local travel affordable https://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/railpass.html Have fun |
Beppu has the Takegawara Bath House which offers a sand bath. When I went to Kyushu I flew from HND to Oita, took the airport bus to Beppu Station, left my suitcase in a locker there and then took my sand bath at Takegawara before continuing on to Usuki....

Thank you for memories of Beppu, my "home" town for the first two years after the war was over. The spas were filthy and overrun with charred wood from the air attacks on the city. Sand baths were not even considered in those days. On a return visit as a tourist in 2007, I found the town where sewage had once run in the streets, built into a modern, pretty town and it's popular spas.
I was honored by escorts of the Japanese Defense Forces who referred to me as "sir"..The Beppu Peace Park is a gorgeous, major Japanese Garden...don't miss. The airport at Oita is quite unique with its one runway paralleling the shore with little room to spare. Enjoy. Stu Tower, (19th Infantry Regiment). |
