Japan itinerary suggestions

Travelling to Japan with my wife in May this year. We have a cruise from 18-25 May Kobe to Kobe covering Hiroshima, Matsuyama, Busan and returning back to Kobe. We would have about 10 days prior to the cruise to see Japan. Is it a good idea to make Tokyo and Kyoto as base and take day trips or change hotels regularly. Which is a better option? Or stay in Ryokans. A sample itinerary would be appreciated suggesting NOT TO MISS destinations. Will there be a chance to see cherry blossoms anywhere since it would be past the season

Tokyo and Kyoto are not all that close to one another. And whether to take day trips from either or both depends on what you want to see, at what pace, and in what way. You will need to decide what you want to see and how to allocate your time -- and none of us can tell you how to do that. Spend LOTS of time with japan-guide.com

Spending a night in ryokan can be a delightful -- and expensive -- experience. Do some research to decide whether it's something you want to do, and if so, where.

From Tokyo a day's trip to Nikko would be in order;
I also traveled by train to Takayama, Matsumoto and Kanazawa:
The trip took a little more than a week.
