Japan: ATM Machines

Planning to head to Japan soon. Was wondering if anyone has any advice about how to get cash when needed? … Can I use my Australian ATM card in a Japanese bank ATM machine?
We usually just use our ATM cards (with Maestro/Cirrus) when travelling in other countries. Not sure about Japan though.
Will definitely be carrying some cash but will still need to access some more.
Would be really grateful for advice from Forumites.
Thanks

Here's some information from japan-guide.com

I am from the US and my chipped Maestro debit card did not work in the Post Office but it did work in 7 Eleven which are just about ubiquitous in most of Japan. Other cards - non-chipped and chipped Visa debit cards worked in both...

Make sure you contact your bank first....

We were able to use the bank ATMs in Narita airport upon arrival and otherwise used ATMs inside convenience stores (7-11). We had no difficulty getting cash when we needed it.

@ Kathie -- there have been some recent troubles with Maestro cards at some ATMs in Japan. That information is included on the japan-guide.com page to which Mara directed the OP.

Ah, thanks for the info, kja. My cards are part of the Plus network and we had no problems.
