japan - 9 days
I was wondering if someone could suggest an itinerary for Japan in March. I will be visiting a friend in Tokyo, but would like to see other places - any suggestions???
|
Kyoto definitely - coming up to cherry blossom time!
Also Nara if you are interested in scenic temples/history
|
Sumo grand tournament in Osaka in March.
|
Kamakura and Nikko are very nice areas to visit!

Nikko was about about 2 hours outside of Tokyo by rail.

Kamakura was an hour by rail. Very historic area w/ lots to see. Quaint town. I'd definitely advise renting a bike rather than taking a bus around the tourist sites (weather permitting).

Bonjour S,

How long will you stay ? What do you already know about Japan, and what does interest you ? Will your friend have time to take you around ?

You could first look at a guidebook for a general idea of what there is to see and do (Eyewitness guide of Japan, for example), then at www.jnto.go.jp, and ask the closest office of Japan National Tourist Organisation (you'll find the address on their site at www.jnto.go.jp) for free maps, pamphlets, affordable accomodation lists, etc..

The other posters have already given you some good suggestions.
Kyoto was worth the trip but i was not as adventurous as i should have been..we had rainy weather so it made walking around tough but it is a lovely city, easy to navigate when dry! enjoy

What a coincidence!!! I'm spending exactly 9 (8.5) days in Japan in March as well and I'll be staying with a friend in Tokyo and my cousin in Nagoya. I can share my itinerary with you so you can get some ideas. I'll be flying into Tokyo and I'm planning on taking a day trip to either Nikko or Kamakara (Nikko was recommended by my friend in Japan since the 2 are very similar), 1 day to see Tokyo. Next I'll take make Nagoya my home for the next 5 days where I'm planning to use 3 days for Kyota, Nara & Osaka and 1 day in Hiroshima and 1 day for Hemji. Make sure you buy a JR pass before you leave for Japan, you'll save a bundle. Have fun

Bonjour All,

How about a Japan-loving-Fodorites get together in March ? I'm taking my mother for a 18 days tour, flying to Osaka/Kyoto on March 15, leaving through Tokyo on Apr 4.

The itinerary is not set yet (have to calm mom down: "no, we can't do all that in 3 weeks, no, I can't stay 6 months, "yes, you'll have to make up your mind" ;-) ), but we'll most likely use Kyoto as home base for the first half, then move to Tokyo and maybe further North.

Bonjour Reddy,

We'll sure be in Kyoto on the 21st, the day of Kobo-San, the big flea-market at Toji-temple behind the train station. There's also a big 3 days antiques fair in Kyoto around the 22-24, something I wouldn't miss. This should make for enoough occasions to meet fellows fodorites in Kyoto.
