dear fodor,
What do you suggest for 18 days in Japan? To get a feel for the people and the vibe of the country. We are from Israel. And are seniors with good physical abilities.

Look at the Japan guide site for ideas; this is an excellent informational sight that has tons of information and also provides many suggested itineraries: http://japan-guide.com

Also, do a search here and review trip reports, especially those of first-timers, to get a sense of what appeals to you. As Peter_T says, there are so many places in Japan to see and so many ways of structuring a trip that it's difficult to make a recommendation. My husband and I are going to Japan next month for the first time and you can search my name to see what we came up with.

You could do a search for "Japan tour package" and check out the itineraries for the tours just to see where they go.

Here is one that has several good stops. It is ridiculous to pack all of that into 10 days but it would make for a good DIY trip over 18 days.
