Is it better to stay in a hotel inside the fort or outside? Any particular suggestions?

There is some controversy about staying inside the fort. When the fort was built there was no water, people would walk to the wells and just bring back enough for them to use that day.

Now the fort is crumbling because of too much water run off from all the people and tourists staying there.

But even without that fact, I would suggest outside the fort. It is great to have a room that looks at the fort all lit up at night and to see it in the morning is breathtaking.

I stayed inside, before the water issue came up. I had a room that looked out over the outer wall, which was great. I loved the view, and being inside the fort. (Aside from the view, the room wasn't anywhere Bob would consider staying, lol.)

Bob - where are you staying? Any suggestions from anyone on particular hotels?

Avoid Fort Rajwada hotel.

Thanks for the heads up. Fort Rajwada will not be on our list. The reviews are not great anyway.

I just looked on our hotel list. Bob has chosen Nachana Haveli. He is too busy sleeping off the wedding to answer (he got up at 4 am to watch).

In rereading , the Nachana IS just outside the fort in the market, but gets some good and some mixed reviews. Most of the negative have to do with being "old". It is India after all. We are looking forward to it as a Heritage Havelli.

We stayed at www.killabhawan.com, which we loved. You can see our room on the post card of the fort. It was almost like staying at a friend's house.
We also heard the water supply controversy, but honestly - tourists are not the one's using all of the water. Residents were contantly hosing off the area in front of their homes and stores. Lots of cows...

We too chose to stay outside the fort for the same reasons as live42day mentions. It is a world heratige site I think & is destroying itself. Made this decision after I read about it in Lonely Planet guide book & on other sites. Also as mentioned it is great to have a view of the fort from your hotel. Just beautiful

So which hotels have people stayed at and would you recommend that hotel or not?

I think I was in Deepak in room 8. Curling up on the window seat with a cold beer and admiring the view was great, but it was definitely a budget place - the sink drained onto the bathroom floor. Some rooms had no windows.

We loved it. It was noisy but I sleep with earplugs. We had a great view of the fort from our window bench and the rooftop restaurant had a wonderful view too

Hated Shahi Palace. It was terribly noisy and the bed was hard as a rock. Agree it had a nice view of the fort from the rooftop restaurant, but the food up there wasn't very good. After one night we checked out and moved over to the Taj Gateway. SO much better -- comfortable beds, nice amenities, lovely pool, good view though farther away, but best of all, peace and quiet!!!
