We've been there. If you are looking for loose stones, Gem Palace has a good reputation. If you are looking for pre-made jewelry, I don't think you'll find it at good prices in Jaipur. At least we didn't and we visited several shops there. We made our "substantial" jewelry purchases in Delhi. If you do find something you like at Gem Palace, you should bargain. Don't show up with a driver or guide, otherwise you will pay more to cover commissions.

Snath..I hope it's ok to chime in here, although the question was addressed to Craig. In New Delhi, check the Karol Bagh district (If interested in accommodation near that area, I stayed at a wonderful guest house/homestay called Saubhag). Karol Bagh's main street and adjoining smaller streets are a wonderful lively local shopping area with mixture of large and small, clothing, and jewelry and other shops.
One source of recommendations is to do a search of various forums for recommended bridal jewelry shops in a particular city. There should be lots of feedback, as gold jewelry=Indian wedding tradition.

If you go to gem palace , ask to see the old historical pieces from the maharajas days. Beautiful intricate pieces. They have a lot. I bought a pair of earrings there that are beautifully made and moderately priced after some bargaining.
