We spent 5 days in Sikkim a few years ago. Here is my trip report: http://www.fodors.com/community/asia...p-to-india.cfm

You'll need to fly to Bagdogra and arrange to have a car pick you up at the airport to drive you to Gangtok. I'd recommend 3 nights in Gangtok and two nights in Pelling.

We loved the heritage properties where we stayed, both were formerly royal guesthouses. Both are now owned by Elgin Hotels. You can arrange your transport through Elgin.

Both Gangtok & Pelling would entail considerable driving time. Bagdogra to Gangtok will consume nearly 5.3 hours and further to Pelling another about 6 hours. As you have limited time, 3 nights in Darjeeling and two in Glenburn Tea Estate should be fine, imo. The location of Hotel Windamere is unbeatable. They have the old wing which is loved by the Brits, with functional fireplace and great views of the valley. The new wing has lovely rooms with all modern amenities, tv etc. The DRH Club is a must for persons like yours truly who love to read while sipping whisky,a wee bit, at leisure!
The Darjeeling market is a typical Indian Hill-bazaar. It is sheer pleasure buying Darjeeling tea, after tasting it and learning a trick or two how to brew it. This is the second shop on the mall, on your right, as you climb down from the Windamere, forgotten the name!!
The early morning views of the Greater Himalayas were amazing from the Tiger Hill. You will love the toy train from Darjeeling to Ghoom.
Glenburn is an hour and a half from Darjeeling. The rooms are fabulous and some have views both of Sikkim up north and Darjeeling towards the south. It is a place for you simply do nothing!
Enjoy your travels!

To each his/her own. Personally, I would not return to Darjeeling, but we loved Sikkim and would return. The drive from Bagdogra to Darjeeling is only slightly shorter than that to Gangtok. In any case you are in for long drives.
