Itinerary around Chinese New Year
 

We will be visiting HK for the first time around CNY. Could you please comment on our plans? The * indicates a fixed event / time. For example, we are staying at an airport hotel Saturday night and visiting the Big Buddha first thing Sunday morning. I'm wondering if we should switch some things around, specifically go to Macau on CNY day 1, visit the temple, nunnery, and garden on CNY day 2, and do the Peak, ding ding, etc on CNY eve. Of course, we'll be flexible, but I'd like to have a starting plan. Although, I do want to buy the Macau ferry tickets in advance. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

I think your itinerary looks a little too cramped. You want want to build in some flexibility in your schedule. Keep in mind there will be many tourists in Hong Kong over the holidays. Tourist attraction sites will be packed and have long waits especially the tram up the Peak and Wong Tai Sin.
From Hong Kong, you can now take a bus to Macau on the newly constructed bridge that spans 55 km across the sea. Bus is cheaper and faster than the ferry.

Many Chinese go "home" for the New Year and some facilities may be shut. That's info from a long time ago and things may have changed, but it could be good to check schedules in advance.

It looks like you might be planning too much, give yourself enough time to fully enjoy a few things!

Don't forget Sai Kung and the numerous Lion dances performing there. And the 'al fresco' seafood restaurants, on the waterfront, are world class. For more excitement, esp if windy and stormy, take the easy ferry to the golf island and grab lunch or drink as you watch the clouds build on Ma On Shan. Sai Kung also has a great temple and not as jammed as in Kowloon. Upcoming will be the Year of the Pig, very auspicious for travelers.
