I"Timing" Help- Ubud & Which Beach? Oct.22- Nov.19, 2014
Hello! We will be traveling to Bali for one month are are planning to split our time between two weeks in Ubud, and the two at a Beach destination (either Seminyak or Sanur). I know it will be nearing 'wet' season, so I am wondering if anyone can recommend which area we should head to first to optimize our chances of sunshine. Also, if there are further thoughts on which beach locale would best weather-wise, that would be greatly appreciated, too. Thanks!

The 3 areas you mention are just a few miles apart so I cannot imagine any meaningful difference, weather-wise. Ubud is a bit higher so slightly cooler on any given day.
Don't worry about the "wet" season. The weather is lovely with the occasional shower or short downpour at worst. Certainly nothing to avoid.
Make your decisions based on when you can get the accommodations you most want, not the weather.

Hi MmePerdu, Thanks for that clarification! I just thought UBUD was much higher in the mountains, so it would be wetter. Regarding Sanur and Seminyak, do you have any thoughts on those and the east vs. west coasts?

The rainy season doesn't start in earnest until December so you're likely to get more sun than rain during your month. It would make sense to put the beach on the front end, but there's not a significant difference between late-October and early November.
All of Bali's beaches have pluses and minuses, so your choice really depends on what you're looking for. I like Seminyak because it's a great walking beach with big waves and wonderful sunsets with a lot to do in the area. The surf, however, can be rough for swimming depending on the tide and swells.
There are many, many restaurants, shops, clubs and spas in the Seminyak area all within walking distance or a short taxi ride. From Seminyak to the other Southern beaches -- Sanur, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, the Bukit -- can be 45 minutes to an hour+ so you want to think about where you're likely to spend your days and nights.
Recently "Seminyak" has expanded to include a wide geographic area both coastal and inland, so you have to really look at the location of your resort. I like the northern end of Seminyak: Petitenget bordering on Batu Belig. Even though it's quite developed -- and developing -- it retains a lowkey beach resort vibe.
Sanur is quieter, both the community and the surf, with a good swimming beach and a laid-back environment. Eastcoast = sunrise obviously, so again, it's a matter of preference.
Lombok is also a good idea for pretty, swimmable beaches.
Ubud is higher in elevation -- though not actually in the mountains. (Bali has individual volcanic mountains, not a mountain range, per se.) To me, it always seems wetter in Ubud than at the beach, but that may not be statistically accurate. Maybe because it's somewhat cooler than at sealevel.

Hello, I personally find Seminyak extremely crowded, why don't you try Candi Dasa and/or Amed (north east, about 2 hours from Ubud).
You can also look at going to Nusa Lembongan (ferries from Sanur, we used Scoot) for the day or for a few days. We didn't have the time to stay overnight but managed Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. The beaches were empty and gorgeous. You may check some of the photographs here:
