Is Thailand a good place for a deaf single traveler?
 

Howdy folks.

I am trying to knock off a bucket list item, which is basically a foreign vacation to Asia. The main choices are Thailand and Japan. Japan would be very expensive, so Thailand seems like my choice. I have just one worry...

I am deaf, and while I actually speak and lip-read English rather well, lip-reading is very hard with a non-native English speaker. Will "the Land of Smiles" treat me nicely and friendly, even if I am having communication troubles? Would you, if you were deaf, feel you'd enjoy Thailand?

I am a huge Massage nut, as well as a Thai food enthuse. I can easily imagine two massages and four meals a day. I am just worried about whether there would be anything other than those two things.

I see a lot of people signing here in Thailand but I am not sure if the sign language here is different from those in the US. Also, I am pretty sure you can find a guide who know how to sign.

I know a few deaf people who have gone to Thailand and they enjoyed it. And considering most people who go to Thailand don't speak the language, the most common form of communication is hand gestures or body language! (I'd say sign, but it's not quite the same =)

With no disrespect to your deafness - there have been times here when a temporary lack of hearing could be a distinct advantage. Anyone who has been trapped between two karaokes will know what I mean.

THe deaf people who come around bars and cafes selling items to raise money seem to understand my basic attempts at BSL....but I haven't met any other signers.
I'm sure lip reading will be a stubble as Thai people tend to drop consonants and mix up letters such as "R" and "L" and "N"
