Is Tezpur, Assam, Safe??

I am wondering if anyone has been to Assam recently? A friend and I are planning to fly from Kolkata to Tezpur and travel around Tezpur area. In recent light of the ethnic violence at the Assam/Bangladesh border, we are wondering if it safe to go there. (If it makes any difference, I am Canadian:)

I haven't been to Assam, but I did research a trip there (and went to Sikkim instead). There has been ethnic violence in that area for many years. I would stay away from the border area in any case, and I would contact a travel agent in Assam for advice. There are several small local agents that seem excellent from my research, and who could make some great arrangements for you.

Do be aware that Assam is high risk for malaria. If you go, you will want to take malarone or doxycycline as there is resistance to larium there. Do consult with a travel med specialist before you go.
